A few touches of Autumn in our dining room!
With the cooler weather that we’ve been experiencing, I’ve been inspired to add a few touches of Autumn in the dining room. Fall is my favorite season, especially the month of October. After the intense heat of Summer, I’m always so excited to feel those first days of cooler Autumn weather, and all that it brings with it, like sweaters, football, game day parties, gathering around a fire, and those beautiful Autumn colors.
These days, I’m into really easy and simple decorating. I don’t want to spend a lot of time decorating, and I definitely don’t want to spend days cleaning and putting it away when the season is over. I know many of you feel the same way!
My favorite way to decorate for Autumn is to bring out my velvet pumpkins, display in a prominent area (this season, it’s the dining room), add a bit of faux foliage, and voilà, it’s finished!

The center of the dining table features an antique plateau mirror that belonged to my mother. I centered it on the dining table, placing it over a garland of faux Eucalyptus leaves, and on top of the plateau mirror, I placed a small urn.
Any kind of plateau pedestal would work, such as this one HERE.
Anytime you are out thrifting or antiquing, keep an eye out for vintage garden urns. They are the perfect vessel for using inside the home to elevate a vignette such as with this pumpkin. They’re also ideal for displaying moss balls, an orchid, or a collection of white coral all during the year.
This huge persimmon colored pumpkin has been in my collection for several years and I love it because of it’s “big boy” size. It makes quite a statement all on it’s own! I layered the urn with faux Eucalyptus leaves and a few pieces of faux Autumn foliage, and then topped it off with this large pumpkin.
Once the centerpiece was finished, I simply layered velvet pumpkins on both sides, using different sizes and colors. I also tucked in a few faux hydrangeas here and there.
Flanking each side of the pumpkins are a pair of antique Italian wood altar sticks topped with battery operated candles. I love using these candles, because they flicker just like a real candle, and they can be turned on and off with a remote. Their flickering light is so pretty in the evening.
I did sprinkle a few Autumn touches in a couple of other areas, though the dining room received the most attention. Our home is mostly open concept, and the dining room can be seen from the front entry, living room, and kitchen.
We’re currently in the process of adding box moulding to the walls in the dining room, and then we’ll be painting, so the next time I show this room, it will look a little bit different.
We have a sweet chest by our front door that I’ve had for almost twenty years. I bought it new, and fell in love with it’s turtle feet! It sits right by our front door, and I have kept an old urn there filled with my collection of white coral. I love the coral so much, and it took me quite awhile to amass enough to fill the urn, so I’m always reluctant to replace it for seasonal decorating.
So this year, I decided to leave the coral in place and just place a few chinoiserie, white, and gold pumpkins around the base.
The chinoiserie pumpkins are so easy to make, using the same method that I used for our chinoiserie Easter eggs. And I also made a dark blue pumpkin and used a silicone chinoiserie mold and resin to make a 3 dimensional design.
The only other area that I decorated was the latest addition to our home, the French demilune cabinet that I just repainted.
I’m still quite enamored with how this cabinet looks now after it’s makeover, and I especially love the color. It just seemed to be begging for a few velvet pumpkins and acorns!
As you can see, I kept the Autumn decorating pretty simple.
That’s what’s so wonderful about a collection of velvet pumpkins, they always make the perfect decorating pieces for this time of year and they can stay on display all the way to Thanksgiving! They are wonderful to collect and if stored properly, can be used year after year!
{After the season, I place my velvet pumpkins in lidded plastic bins and store in a cool, dry area. Just be careful of the stems when placing in the bins!}
And now, for our giveaway! To help you start or add to your collection of velvet pumpkins, we’re giving away three of these beauties, a 6″ Bone, 5″ Eggplant with feathers, and 4″ Sienna. A $115.00 value!

I love seeing your posts and just recently discovered your blog through Yvonne @ Stone Gable! I don’t know if the velvet pumpkins are a current giveaway, but I Love them! Creative uses of your greens, coral, & candles along with the blue pumpkins! This gets me excited for the “runway” of seasons ahead!
I have also used velvet pumpkins, that I have made, in my fall displays. They are fun and easy to make
I would be simply honored to have one of your fabulous pumpkins! I love following your post whether it’s on Facebook or Instagram. I’ve learned a lot from your post – maybe even more than my course study in redesign and home staging! (shhhh….don’t let my instructor know I said this) 🙂
Love your style of decorating. I have learned much from your posts. Would love to add these pumpkins to my fall decor.
I love using colors of teal, pinks, orange and some brown in my fall decor.
Love it all
Like you, I love to decorate with my velvet pumpkins and also my chinoiserie pumpkins that I made. This year I made a few leopard print pumpkins to add to the mix.
Hi Cindy, I thoroughly enjoy your blog. I always glean ideas to implement in my home’s decor. In early fall I bring in natural elements but the last week in October finds me raiding my stash of vintage Halloween decorations to add to the mix.I love velvet pumpkins and have attempted to craft my own but not successfully. Thanks for the chance to win three lovely ones.
I always look forward to your post, you have a great eye and fabulous taste, I love fall, it’s my favorite time of year, lots of orange, browns, greens , mustard yellows, and I also love the pretty pastel fall style too
We love to decorate our new outdoor living space with pumpkins. I absolutely LOVE these! This would be a great way to jump start our Velvet Pumpkin collection for our home!
Love! Love! Velvet pumpkins!! They look good in any type of decor. I’ve been following your Etsy for years now your blog.
Than you for the gorgeous ideas! I’ve recently started a collection of velvet pumpkins.
I absolutely LOVE everything you post! I have multiple pics saved for inspiration!
I love to decorate with mercury glass pumpkins in various jewel tone colors much like the colors of your beautiful velvet pumpkins!!
Love these pumpkins and your decor so much! Thanks for sharing.
It’s so fun to peek into your new home! I go pretty subdued in my fall decor these days. I have a nice little collection of velvet pumpkins I use in a centerpiece on the coffee table. And of course lots of pumpkins, mums, decorative corn and stalks on the porch.
Give my friend John a big hug and hello from me, and we look forward to a drink or a meal one of these days.
Love your blog and your Etsy shop! Just ordered your recommended gold leaf rub and buff to glitz up a few things for fall. Thank you for sharing your tips.
Hello Cindy-
I love the Fall decorating with the velvet pumpkins and the simplicity of everything. Great job as always! It’s so much fun to read about decorating tips and showing us how you create such beautiful items. Great job, as always! Cheryl
I love every thing you do. I love to use lanterns on my front porch and surround with faux pumpkins.
Fall is my favorite season!!!
The crisp air, wonderful smells and family gatherings.
So the decorating is exciting. I also love the velvet pumpkins, faux fall leaves and hydrangeas. I also came across these large acorns one year.
Keep up the beautiful work you do!!!
It inspires me.
Hi Cindy, I Love your tutorial inspiration, and Love how you decorated with velvet Pumpkins in an assortment of colors through out your house.
Love the velvet pumpkins and started a collection last year. For fall decorating, I use lots of orange winterberries, faux green apples, and faux orange and green pears with loads of pumpkins, of course. I have owned a large black ceramic pumpkin from Vietri for years and it is always a prominent part of my kitchen display.
Your decorating looks beautiful and elegant. I love the coral mixed with fall pumpkins. I use a lot of faux fall leave & floral bunches placed in blue and white chinoiserie vases plus a wicker cornucopia.
Love, love your blog! I gather a beautiful bouquet of fall colored leaves and place them on various surfaces in my home.
I bought blue and aqua pumpkins
Cindy! You have changed my decorating life! I’ve always been drawn to antiques with curvy legs and form. It wasn’t until I discovered you that my decorating style came together. I began to collect altar candles and from there risers, velvet pumpkins, etc. This summer I realized my most coveted item …… a marvelous buffet found in a farmhouse in the south of France. Took 3 months to get to me but well worth the wait.
It’s all so beautiful! I have wanted to try making velvet pumpkins but never seem to get to it. I love decorating with pumpkins of all colors esp white, pale orange and the green tinted ones.
Pretty! I adore the velvet pumpkins! They make it so easy to quickly create fall ambiance and they are so pretty it’s tempting to keep them out all year!
I enjoy using velvet pumpkins also. I made my own a few years ago. I purchased a couple of little girl velvet dresses from Goodwill in dark purple and wine and made different size pumpkins for a friend and myself. Would love to add different colors to my collection. Yours are lovely and you display them beautifully.
I have a few velvet pumpkins but not as pretty as yours!
Can’t go wrong with dried hydrangea
I also love velvet pumpkins. I place mine in a large antique silver tray on the coffee table. Then scatter mini pumpkin potpourri all around the arrangement. Looks elegant and yet has a country flair too.
I am also a firm believer in adding simple seasonal touches to existing decor. As always, your decor is so inspirational. I look forward to your posts
What a wonderful giveaway. Thank you for the chance. I’m planning an engagement party for my son and future daughter in law this weekend. I pinned your beautiful vignette you did on your table. Thank you for such a wonderful blog post.
Fall decorating that is whimsical, sophisticated/ elegant or bold is perfect for different areas in our home. Using amber and green glass flower frogs from my collection adds an easy and unexpected touch of fall color.
Love the velvet pumpkins. I first saw them on your blog years ago. Would love to win one. Thanks for sharing your beautiful decorating ideas. Mary
Love you Autumn decor. Fall is my time of the year, in nature I find the most intense colors. Shop your yards for Autumn decor, leaves, branches, clippings from the evergreens, Farmer’s markets for pumpkin, squash. gourds, colorful corn.
Hi Cindy: I found you about 18 months ago and am so happy to find you in my in box. I too am a collector and lover of antiques. Love all your vignettes. My mom had a saying that I truly believe. Just the right amount of too much! Kudos
Hi Cindy!
Love all things French Country…. my favorite fall decor includes pumpkins and hydrangeas, usually in the colors blue, green, with a touch of pink.
Your home is beautiful!
Thank you for the urn link available through Amazon.
My favorite autumn decorating begins with fall cleaning, and then richer colors, textured throws, autumn colors in floral arrangements, and so on. You have perfected autumn decorating in your new house!
Cindy, I us3 a lot of wooden pumpkins my husband cuts out in his wood shop and I paint. So not the fanciest but things we have done together which makes them special. Love your velvet pumpkins. Thanks for the giveaway. Happy Autumn.
Cindy,
I am in awe of your design talents. I too love French/Italian old world style. I especially like how you use traditional religious art in your home. So beautiful!
You’ve inspired me to paint my 35 year old China Cabinet after seeing how you’ve transformed so many pieces in your home.
I won’t be decorating much for Autumn this year as we just survived Hurricane Ian here in Fort Myers,FL. Pray for all the victims please!
Love the velvet pumpkins! I decoupaged a group of large pumpkins with blue and white chinoiserie napkins, and display them in my foyer and kitchen!
Your home is just stunning! I love following you on Instagram and getting inspiration for my own home! You are so very talented!
Like you, I am a fan of velvet pumpkins with real stems. A girl can’t have too many!
I love your beautiful and elegant fall table. I decorated mine last week and always look forward to your posts for inspiration. Looking forward to your next post when it will look different after you paint and install your new molding.
My favorite way to decorate for fall is to do small vignettes around my home to decorate for the season! I also have quite a few velvet pumpkins and love placing them here and there! I’ve also found ways to decorate with plastic pumpkins but I paint them to add to the autumn theme. I like a full look! Love your fall decor and thank you for the giveaway!
Hi, Cindy! I love the velvet pumpkins also, but I don’t have as large of a collection as you. I am working on it though!! I bought a bunch of green ones with matching acorns this year. SO BEAUTIFUL! I also just bought a piece of Ethan Allen furniture (garage sale! woohoo) that I’m going to try my hand at using your painting project technique. My husband is totally on board and is going to help me….and my college age son is getting our old sofa table for his apartment next year (most likely to prop his giant TV on). It’s a total win-win!! Lots of fun stuff happening at my house!
I had to comment on the simple and elegant Fall decor! It’s beautiful and very encouraging that such loveliness can be so easily attained. Please do not include me in the Giveaway. I won the wonderful Pure and Original Paint giveaway several years ago and redid our inherited knee hole desk! Your blog continues to be wonderfully generous and inspiring. Bless you.
I don’t do much fall decorating. I live in the hot AZ desert, and I always forget that it is actually fall!
Your new house is so lovely with all of your beautiful things! Love how you arrange your velvet pumpkins. And the demilune chest – be still my heart! Wish I had your painting skills. My fall decorating this year is down to a dough bowl filled with pine cones, fruit and vegetables. Thanks for this super giveaway!
I love velvet! I like to decorate with pumpkins, of course ☺, and fall foliage. I copper leafed some big foam pumpkins a couple of years ago and they are one of my favorite things to put out.
Cindy, you are so talented. The newly painted demilune chest is just gorgeous!
I decorate for Fall with neutral colors since orange is not in my color palette. Dried hydrangeas, sun flowers and neutral stems cover my mantle, Buffet and dining table. I’m interested to see how you put your personal touch on this new home.
Happy Fall
I never get tired of seeing your beautiful decor. Love those velvet pumpkins! I already follow you on Instagram. Thanks for the giveaway!!! xo Kathleen
I love your beautiful home, Cindy! My favorite season is fall. I decorate with real pumpkins outside and faux pumpkins inside. I can never have to many pumpkins! I would love to include velvet pumpkins in my decor. Thank you for offering us this drawing! I also follow you on Instagram.
Cindy – thank you for all the wonderful decor ideas. It’s such fun to see how you are decorating your new home. The velvet pumpkins just add to the fun!
I followed you on Instagram. Your velvet pumpkins look SO wonderful. I love seeing the really big one mixed in with the different sized smaller ones and the hydrangeas. Your table looks wonderful.
Cindy, I was able to visit the estate sale in Mobile this past weekend. Now I’m lamenting about the things I did not buy or look at again no! I love your decorating style and all of your great ideas
As always your dining table is fabulous. I too do less decorating these days. My main focus are my velvet pumpkins. I love these colors, and would love to add to my collection. Thank you for all your ideas!
I traveled in September and returned to find it October already so probably will do very little fall decorating this year. However, soon after I saw those lovely clay adornments you applied to faux pumpkins last year, I’ve had everything I need to attempt to make my own so hope I can get around to doing that soon.
Your home is always beautiful Cindy!
I decorate for the holidays very simple now since I lost my husband five years ago. I decorate now for my pleasure so like you I put a few velvet pumpkin’s out.
The velvet pumpkins are so beautiful!
The color and texture brings an elevated style to fall!
Love your rug in the hallway!
I adore your style and fall decorations. I would love to win this fabulous give away of velvet pumpkins. I enjoy your posts so much!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas! The photography is stunning.
I like to decorate for autumn with natural leaves, nuts and feathers I find while hiking. A few soft, luxurious items strike a nice balance. Your velvet pumpkins would be perfect!
Love your fall decor! I decorate with different pumpkins I’ve made from fabrics or hand painted. I’ve ordered the molds to use in future projects. Thanks for the chance to win! I’ve followed you on IG, your blog and Pinterest for years! My home looks much like yours!
Your table is stunning. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win. I mostly use faux pumpkins to decorate for autumn.
I love to decorate with dried florals. Some velvet pumpkins sure would be nice 😉
You inspire me in every way! In fact I am going to get out my glass pumpkins today! I love decorating for fall also with beautiful fall leaves that a friend gave me years ago and another friends made me three small pumpkins that I truly love. I always have something on my dining room table and I have some unbreakables by the fireplace for the grands to enjoy. I follow you on IG and I am going to Pinterest to see your page. Keep doing what you do best…decorating!
Your table and all the decor is lovely. Always love these velvet pumpkins. Thank you for sharing.
The velvet pumpkins are SO luxe and pretty, would make any table a celebration! I love your blog and enjoy seeing each beautiful thing you create, each space you enhance. Thank You~!
I always love when you offer a velvet pumpkin giveaway. You’e done a wonderful job with your fall decor.
I love to read your posts and your decorating ideas. I also love the French look but cannot afford French antiques. I try to recreate the look with pieces I think look kind of French. You do such a good job of refinishing furniture and I am always pleasantly surprised at the finished outcome. This Autumn after reading your post I placed a large pumpkin (Not velvet ) on top of a urn ( not vintage) with some eucalyptus and additional pumpkins surrounding the urn. I totally LOVE the velvet pumpkins I have a couple small ones I placed on a shelf, the large are a little pricey for me I would love to start collecting them. Keep providing all of us with new ideas and pics of your French decor. Love it.
Your fall decor is beautiful…just the perfect amount of embellishment for your stunningly beautiful home. Velvet pumpkins are positively yummy!
Hi Cindy! What a lovely giveaway! I would be thrilled to win, as a divorcee’ on a limited income, I have always craved being able to find some affordable velvet pumpkins! After reading your blog, I went out and bought some velvet pumpkins. Love the look and love your blog.
I love the velvet pumpkins! Our home is open concept also and they would be a lovely addition to the dining table!
I decorate with acorns, bird feathers which I have found on my daily walks, leaves and pumpkin…your home is just perfectly beautiful.
I get so excited to see every new thing you do or how you decorate for each season. Each new project you do I try to find a piece for my home to diy what you did to your project. My friends see the piece and say ” let me guess, Cindy right? Thanks for all the beautiful things you show use.
Velvet pumpkins, foliage, and dried elements like lotus pods. I’m not a big orange person, so my decor tends to lean more “natural” for fall.
Thank you for all the beautiful ideas. I have been adding to my collection since I first saw them on you first post. And, you’re right, they are like potato chips. You can’t have just one. I love your moss pumpkins also.
Can’t wait to see your Christmas ideas. Ramona
I add black and gold pumpkins in my living room but I love how you decorated your dining room table. I am now on the hunt for a mirrored pedestal like yours!!
I like to use the Velvet pumpkins along with the blown glass pumpkins and vintage pictures of owls to add to the fall scene.
Thank you for your inspiration for decorating! I love velvet pumpkins, acorns and chinoiserie. I made my own silk velvet pumpkins last fall when I had to take 10 days off work due to covid.
I’m so glad you said you are going to add molding and paint in the dining room. I can’t wait to see it. I love the velvet pumpkins but they are a little pricey for me. I have covered several plastic pumpkins with a blue and white Laura Ashley fabric I found at a garage sale. You are a great inspiration to me.
I too decorate with velvet pumpkins ! I like to change it up a little every year. Lanterns filled with dried hydrangeas or orange/rust candles are something I’ve added over the years. This year I added a chalkboard framed in gold that I’ve written Autumn shows us how Beautiful Iris to let things go. Love your decor !!! Your urns are so pretty for anytime of year !!
Simple and elegant!
You have a beautiful home and I love your Fall decorations. I love to decorate by using lots of texture consisting of items found outside, drying flowers, mixing in some of my colored glass and silver..
Cindy
It gives me great pleasure always, to view and read your blog. Everything about it is wonderful. I especially love your fall velvet pumpkins decor! Love love
Thank you for tbe joy you bring to me and to others.
Evelyn
I love the idea of the urn. I am layering my fall things in a basket this year. I could use some velvet pumpkins! Whether I win or not, thank you for the post.
Wonderful article! The way I decorate for autumn is the change the colors used throughout the downstairs to more earth tones-browns,golds,rust,coral. Changing the pillows,a few paintings, the wreath on the front door. Adding witches for Halloween and turkeys for Thanksgiving.
There is not one thing you do in your home I do not like. Small touches of fall are my favorite and you do it with such elegance and grace. I look forward to my inbox to see what treasures you behold for my eyes.
I have a small collection of pumpkins and love adding to it whenever possible.
I am definitely going to copy your dining room fall decor although I don’t have any of the velvet pumpkins yet (hint hint) I will use some real and some mercury glass with hydrangeas to evoke a fall tablescape….love the antique chest you painted….it’s perfect and to me part of the beauty is the less than perfect marble on top adds to its story❤️
Love your touches of autumn. I like to scour my yard for branches, leaves, and acorns to add natural touches to my decor, but of course I must use my velvet pumpkins as well.
As with every post beauty and inspiration. The pumpkins are just so pretty and you give us great ideas for their display. Thank you for the chance to win a set for my home.
Seeing your posts makes me so happy. You have such talent in everything you do. I love the pumpkins and all the pretty colors they came in. I live in Florida so haven’t had a chance yet to do any decorating. Been raking all the debris from Ian for days. Thanks for all your inspirations.
Hi Cindy….I love all your great stuff. I love velvet pumpkins and can’t get enough! My daughters birthday is in October so first we have to go all out with spooky stuff and so I have black velvet and maroon velvet pumpkins along other ghoulish stuff. Then after Halloween I switch to fall and then transition to TG. I even found adorable velvet plush acorns. Your site has been my inspiration for my entire home for the past 8 or so years. I miss your old house:(
Another beautiful seasonal display. I love the way that your displays are simple, but a visual delight for the eye. Thank you for sharing your creativity and talents!
Love velvet pumpkins! I found a velvet pumpkin wreath in excellent condition at a thrift store years ago and was so excited! My favorite way to decorate for Fall is with pumpkins, leaf garlands, ribbon and candles. My dining room table and chandelier, fireplace and doors are decorated so far.
Following you is such a pleasure! The velvet pumpkins are just the right touch for fall. I have been collecting them for a couple of years , No matter where I set them they look great. Thanks for all the ideas. Mollie

Hi Cindy , I’ve been following you for years too and love how you rescue most precious art of the Angels , Saints and most of all the Holy Family. I would love to be entered into your drawing.
My favorite way to decor for Fall is with natural elements: pumpkins (especially “Cinderella”), mums, grapevine & boxwood…things that don’t require storage & bring a fresh organic look to the house.
Everything is beautiful, Cindy! I’m with you, I prefer decorating with a few key pieces. I can’t wait to see your dining room.
Mums, Indian corn, dried corn stalks and a few pumpkins in the mix. My favorite style is primitive/rustic, so anything that screams “old and worn” is welcome. I really enjoy following your blog, though to see what else is possible. Blessings on you and yours!

I like to decorate for Fall with Fall themed throw pillow slipcovers, real and artificial pumpkins, gourds, dried corn husks, and fox figurines.
My velvet pumpkins are placed on the dining room table, coffee table and one under a cloche on a buffet. I can always use three more. 😉
A lovely display with just the right amount of elegance
Fall is one of my favorite seasons to decorate. I put out pumpkins that I’ve decorated and velvet ones too.

Hi Cindy,
Over the years, I have collected faux gourds of various shapes and sizes. I will sometimes place them in a long basket or my antique copper pot. I too love fall!
April Wharton
Big pumpkin centerpiece=Big Statement! Thank you for the tip about buying an antique urn!
I love those velvet pumpkins!! They would look wonderful on my baby grand!!
Simple and beautiful! I love using a non traditional fall color pallette like peach and deep purple. It is a bit unexpected
Lovely as always. A favorite way to decorate for fall is bringing in some of the late blooms from the garden.. We are surrounded by art in our home, so until the Christmas decor, our autumn is more subtle.
