English Dairy Slabs and a Giveaway!
I’m so excited about this giveaway, and I know that you will be too!
Many years ago, I saw an antique English dairy slab displayed in a beautiful kitchen, which was featured in a popular interior design magazine.
At the time, I was already collecting English advertising pots. And after discovering these century old dairy slabs, I became obsessed with trying to find one to add to my collection.
This was easier said than done!
I searched everywhere……flea markets, auctions sites, and antique stores, but I never found one until last November, when I found TWO of them in an antique shop in Memphis!
I almost fainted when I saw them sitting on a shelf inside a shop booth. If you missed that post, you can read about it here. I’m still in shock that I found two authentic antique dairy slabs, a CHEESE and a PURE BUTTER slab, at a fraction of the price of what they are worth.
Antique dairy slabs were originally made from ironstone in England during the Edwardian period, dating to the late 1800’s – early 1900’s.
They were used in grocery stores and markets for margarine, butter, lard, meats, and cheeses.
The ironstone slab would keep the products cool while stored inside the dairy cases. And of course, the black typography on each slab is the icing on the cake.
Highly sought after as a collectible, they are a true rarity to find one today, and they can sell for thousands of dollars.
For years, I searched for reproductions of these rare dairy pieces, hoping to just “get the look”, since I couldn’t find the real deal.
At the time, there was only one company making reproduction dairy slabs, which was in England, and they were constantly sold out. I would check every few weeks, but it seemed that they never restocked them.
But, there is good news!
I recently discovered a fabulous pottery company in Houston, Texas.
Wyatt, of Living Soul Pottery is now reproducing these amazing dairy slabs!
I was so excited when I discovered this company! If, like me, you have been wanting one (or two) of these dairy slabs, you can now have one at a very reasonable price!
Wyatt makes the dairy slabs in different sizes and topography. They are a bit like potato chips….you can’t have just one!
They are so much fun to stack several together or top with a glass cloche!
The slabs are so well done, and they are collectible all on their own. They make beautiful serving or display pieces, and add the perfect whimsical charm to your kitchen.
Wyatt, of Living Soul Pottery, has been involved with pottery since his college days in the mid 70’s, and went on to teach middle school art, including pottery, for ten years. Then his career took him away from pottery for the next 20 years.
But in 2009, he returned to the art classroom as a pottery teacher, and today, Wyatt teaches high school pottery full time at the Lutheran South Academy in Houston, Texas.
Six years ago, Wyatt opened his own Etsy shop, and three years ago, he earned a Master Degree in Studio Pottery from the University of Houston.
The name of Wyatt’s shop, Living Soul Pottery, has a very special meaning behind it.
The name comes from Genesis 2:7, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Wyatt says, “I believe we are each an individual unique creation of God, and in the same way we are special and handmade, so is each piece of pottery that I make. I use this reference regularly when I teach my students. In the beginning when God created the earth everything was without form and void. The same way God created His whole Creation, we as clay artists, also start with just a lump of clay that is without form and void. Man has been gifted by God the same ability to create something from nothing.”
Don’t you just love that?
Knowing the story behind the creation of these dairy slabs, makes them even more special.
And now for the giveaway!!
Wyatt has graciously offered to giveaway one 9″ CHEESE dairy slab to one lucky reader, and we’re so excited about it!
