Adding paneled walls to a room is an easy way to bring in architectural detail for a custom look!
One of my favorite projects that we’ve done to our home is adding the paneled walls in the foyer. Our foyer is large, open to the second story, and flows into a hallway that leads to the bedrooms.
All of the walls in the foyer were covered in forty year old wallpaper when we bought it. Taking down the wallpaper was time consuming, but thankfully it was easy to remove, unlike some of the other rooms that we’ve renovated!
For months, leading up to the foyer’s renovation, I pinned inspiration photos on Pinterest.
Many of the foyers that I was drawn to had one thing in common…..paneled walls.
I loved the architectural detail and custom look that the paneled walls gave a space.
I decided that we could create the look of paneled walls by using decorative trim and moulding, and creating boxes along the walls.
The foyer is large, so we ended up using lots of trim. And a lot of time was spent building boxes, but it was well worth it in the end.
The sheetrock behind the wallpaper was in great shape which allowed us to use the wall as the backing for our boxes. Once the wall and trim was painted one color, it had the appearance of all wood.
Hubby was less than thrilled at the prospect of building all the boxes and placing them on the walls….especially in the curve of that staircase.
However, he soon got on board with the idea….as I knew he would!
As the project progressed, and we got more of the boxes built and installed, we could start visualizing the impact it was going to make. Adding paneled walls to a room will definitely give it the wow factor!
Hubby and I made a pretty good team on this project. He would measure, cut, and install the boxes, and I would come in behind him and caulk the seams and nail holes.
Once that was finished, I could start painting. We painted the paneled walls in Sherwin Williams Snowbound. The walls above the paneling are painted in Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray.
In these next photos, you can see the final result. I love the look of the paneled walls in our foyer!
This is a look that could be done in any room for a custom look.

I hope you have a great weekend, I’m off to do a little antiquing for the shop!
Cheers, Cindy
The faux paneling looks very elegant. You are clever to think of these budget-kind ideas that turn out so terrific. As I read this post, I found myself wishing I could see more “before” pictures. When I clicked on the link to your previous post about the foyer, there was a shot of the staircase carpet and the infamous green tile. All this time, I’ve been thinking, how bad could rose-patterned carpet be? Now I understand. And that green tile was ghastly! You have improved this home so much. You must have been intrepid and blessed with a lot of imagination to see past this house’s original decor to the gem it has become.
Hi Cindy,
Looks great! We were curious about the size of the finish nails you are using to secure the molding. Is it being nailed directly into drywall?
Hi Dena! I believe we used 2″, 18 gauge nails. It’s nailed into the sheetrock, and we also added Liquid Nails to the back of each piece for added security.
It looks absolutely amazing! I love the contrast of all the white with the wood paneling and wood stairs. The wrought iron is gorgeous! What a stunning entry. You both are doing a fantastic job of transforming your home. I know you will be so thrilled when it’s finished. But then a home is never really finished is it?
OMGoodness! This is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to see it completed. You 2 are one heck of a team. My hubby and I are too but have never tackled anything like this! When we built our last house we did set and stain all the doors (23 of them)!! Then stained all the woodwork, he built all the vanities and a bar, and we finished the basement. We are too old for all that now;):) BEAUTIFUL job!!!!
Thank you Pinky!
Wow, this is soooo clever! How grand and simply beautiful all in one. Brilliant!
Thank you so much Katie!
Oh my, oh my! It is already gorgeous and you aren’t even finished! What a beautiful grand entry!
Thank you Renee!
My mistake! I was just scrolling thru, and realized you have a single door! It’s so grand, it fooled my eye into thinking it was a double door. Hope you have a lovely day! Cynthia
I’m a new subscriber, so I’ve never really seen your house. It’s beautiful! There’s something about a double set of doors that let’s you know it’s special inside, and your home certainly is. Looking forward to seeing your finished project. Take care, Cynthia
Oh, my goodness, Cynthia, thank you so much for following along, and for your kind comments!
Cindy your home is gorgeous! I love everything that you have done. Your kitchen is magnificent as is the dining room. You have so much talent for someone who has never done this before!
Thank you so much Cindy!
Cindy~
It looks absolutely amazing, I love it !! I think the prior owners would be speechless!!
Your home is a so beautiful , if I was your neighbor I would be over all the time hehe. I dont know if my husband would even attempt that??!!! My dad sure would have !!:)
Question?? When I tried to use filler in crown molding at the seams it was not easy, so of course I stopped, I am wondering if this should be done at each end of the trim board and push them together when applying to wall ?? if that make any sense?
Can’t wait to see your buys from your shopping trip !!
Paula IN
p.s my dear sister passed away on 2/23. She will be missed greatly.Thank you for prayers.
Oh no Paul, I am so sorry to hear about your sister! I will definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers, dear friend. Your technique might work, I’ve never done it that way. I always use spackle or caulk….unless it’s a larger “gap”, then I use wood filler, and haven’t had any issues with that.
Oh my goodness it’s beautiful but I’m thinking the hardest part of this job has to be the MATH! Makes my head spin!!
Thank you Kim! Yes, fortunately, all I have to do is draw a picture on paper for hubby to look at, showing him what I’m wanting. Then he makes it all work mathematically!
Cindy, it is looking amazing! Your hubby and you make an amazing team! Great job on the training! Any advice on how can I train my hubby?? LOL!
You have amazing taste and it is so wonderful how you can translate your vision to reality. I cannot wait to see the finish foyer! Thanks for sharing the progress!
Thank you Cristina! Keep after that hubby of yours, perseverance pays off!

Just what the foyer needed!
You’ve been keeping busy!
Thanks for keeping us updated. I’m curious like I imagine all of us are, to see the final reveal…
It makes such a difference too, that you add on some height to all doorways. Really gives nice proportions to the rooms.
If you consider painting the sides of the stairtreads as well – wouldn’t it be nice with some added decorative ‘gingerbread’ detailing? I mean, a simple, ‘ornamental shelf bracket’ – style thin piece of cut out wood, that you’d attach to each tread. Something like this:
https://www.google.se/search?newwindow=1&biw=853&bih=399&tbm=isch&tbs=simg:CAQSJglzYXc1Zs8dyBoSCxCwjKcIGgAMCxCOrv4IGgAMIcXuccSNTQrG&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiUgvSW_afLAhXiIpoKHV7CAbIQwg4IGSgA&dpr=2.25
Although simplified. And painted.
Just a thought, one decorator to another.

Just gorgeous! I love the height you chose much more elegant with 12 foot ceilings. I look forward to your post so much. Your bedroom with that white tree was swoon worthy.
Thank you Deborah!

Hi Cindy – absolutely beautiful! You guys have done an amazing job. What paint are you using on the molding? Is it a Satin or semi gloss?
Love it!
susan
Thank you Susan! We are using semi gloss.
Lovely! And you are so lucky to have a husband who is eager to help you bring your ideas to fruition. Can’t wait to see it done!
Thank you so much Sheila!
Oh Cindy, this may be better than all the rest.Love , Love Love what you envisioned. It is looking so stately and elegance is shining through. Can you imagine a bride walking down that stairway. I noticed your angel has disappeared. Maybe to your shop -Hint Hint ( Just kidding ) She will look beautiful with that new chest you just purchased. I can’t wait to see the final results. You and your husband should be so proud. It is one thing to have it done by someone else but to be able to say-We did it all ourselves. I will be checking you shop to see your new finds. Love and Hugs, Kathy
Oh my goodness, thank you for your sweet comment Kathy! My angel {named Sister Frangelica by hubby} has been moved into storage so she wouldn’t get damaged during the foyer renovation. She’ll make a reappearance soon!
I am pretty sure I drooled a little bit!
What a Beautiful job you and the hubby are doing!
Thank you so much Cindy!
Cindy, woweeeeee it’s coming out magnificently…….I knew you would not disappoint that you would turn your foyer into a grand entrance….I love the panel molding it just gorgeous……I can only imagine how excited you most be to see it all completed, it’s not my home but I swear I’m just as excited as you….lol….
Wishing you a great weekend~
Mari
Lol, thank you Mari!Have a fabulous weekend!
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to your post.
Thank you Julie!
Perfect and perfectly lovely. I’m looking forward to the reveal. Wondering if you would explain how your husband measures to get those lines so perfectly lined up? I mean, does he measure from the floor? What if the floor is uneven? I’m wanting to put up some simple trim around a room and am afraid it will look like a 3rd grader lined it up.
He measured from the top of the baseboard, but only after using a level to make sure that it was sitting level.
What an entrance! I liked it before but now it’s amazing.
Thank you Deborah!
Cindy this is absolutely magnificent. I love how you have created the stacked panels. Very classy. Just lovely. I enjoy following all of your projects as you have gone from room to room. Keep us updated!
Thank you so much Debbie!
Beautiful Cindy! (as always) Love it! Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend!

Evelyn in Arizona
Thank you so much Evelyn…love your name!
Just amazing 🙂
Thank you so much Deb!
Oh wow!!! I can only imagine all the work. We did this in our dining room and it was tedious. But it is luvly.
I know it will be worth it.
Happy weekend.
Thank you Gee! Yes, very tedious, but so worth it in the end!
Beautiful! You are such an inspiration doing this work yourself! It gives me hope my hubby and I could do this? LOL
Thank you so much Gaylin!
Question? Why did you up soooo high…..love the moulding . 36″ is standard w/ 9′ ceilings….
Hi Nancy! It’s a two story foyer with the ceiling being over 12′ in most areas except for one small alcove area. I love the taller mouldingedith for those taller areas. Besides, I’ve never been one to “color inside the lines”……
It’s just stunning! I can’t wait for the final reveal!!! You have such an amazing eye.
Enjoy your antiquing-please do a show and tell of that too!
Thank you Shelley!
Oh Cindy, it is absolutely beautiful!! Your husband is a real talented man.
He is a keeper for sure. Your vision was perfect. Keep up the good work…Rebecca
Thank you Rebecca! Yes, hubby is definitely a keeper……and after 30 years, he’s finally trained, so I’m definitely going to keep him around!
Wow this is going to be just gorgeous! It already looks great so I can only imagine the completed reveal. By the way, I spied a “mora” type wall clock hanging in your den, love that one too. Where did that one come from?
Hope you are having a great day!
Blessings, Candy
Thank you Candy! You have a good eye! That is a clock I found at Goodwill and transformed it into a “Mora” wall clock. I think if you have three of something, it’s considered a collection….I guess I am collecting Mora clocks!
It looks fabulous. I know you need a rest from all of that hard work but the finished project will be the look you envisioned. We need to call you and hubby, “Chip and Joanna.” LOL
Thank you Daphne! Just call us “Cindy and Hubby”! Haha!
Fabulous work. Love the paint as well. The light softly bounces off the paint making it look pearly. What type paint did you use.
Thank you Bara Dale! The color is Sherwin Williams Snowbound, mixed in Benjamin Moore Advance Paint.
Fabulous! That’s all I can say 🙂
Thank you Cheryl!
Cindy, it’s really coming along (as slow as it may feel for you). You and your hubby make a great team! Love the paneling!! So nice and bright! Keep up the good work and I look forward to the final reveal!!
Celia
Thank you so much Celia!
Wow, Cindy, I’m always amazed at the work that you two can do together!! That looks so good.
Thank you Kim! I’m pretty amazed myself sometimes!
I love following the progress of your beautiful home.
Thank you Diane!
How incredibly beautiful Cindy…your hubby did an amazing job with the paneling and then you as the “finishing person”….I can’t imagine how you most likely gasped when you first saw the house, entering through the front door and seeing that amazing foyer and staircase…and then you go forward and create a more spectacular one! Looking forward to the progress…it is stunning!!! Have a great weekend!
Aw, thank you so much for your sweet comment Shirley! Have a wonderful weekend!
