I thought I would share an update on our foyer project. It is coming along, a little slowly {as usual}, but we are making some progress.
All of the old green tile has finally been removed……
And we are still working on getting all the old wallpaper off of the walls. Most of the lower walls are done, but we’re still working on getting it down from the upper walls. It’s a slow process, but thankfully, it is coming down pretty easily.
The old baseboard electric heaters have been removed and we are putting up new baseboard trim.
We are also adding moulding and crown to the top of all the doors and windows to extend the frames. It’s an easy addition and we have done this in each room that we have renovated.
I still don’t have that tapestry off of the wall…..why do I see scaffolding in my future?!?
We are going to panel the walls with board and batten so that is coming up next, as soon as the rest of the wallpaper is down.
We’re also going to be putting in oak floors 0n the second floor landing where the old carpet was removed.
The wrought iron railings will get a fresh coat of black paint. Right now, they have some kind of faux finish on them, something done with turquoise paint….of course.
There are also some light fixtures that will have to be replaced, and a large chandelier to clean!
The stair treads will get sanded down. As you can see there is staining where the old rubber carpet pad melted into the wood.
We have new tile to go down, and everything is going to get a fresh coat of beautiful white paint! The front door will be painted black.
Because the foyer flows right into the hallways that lead to the bedrooms, we are having to do the entirety of it, and as you can see the two story walls extend down the hallway. So even though it’s the foyer, it’s still turned into a pretty big project.
We are slowly gaining ground, and hopefully on the next update I can show you the board and batten paneling going up!
Cheers,
Cindy
I spy shiplap (I think). Joanna Gaines would be thrilled. It will be so beautiful. You must be making that old house sing. She is so much prettier now, even at this point!
Yes, the ceiling is already planked, original to the house! I’m loving it and the large wood beams.
Can I come live with you? I just LOVE your home, you have an incredible eye for everything. I promise I won’t take up much room…maybe even just a closet? And I’ll be real quiet…just a glass of wine is all I ask…think about it while I pack…I only need about 5 minutes to pack!!!
haha Shelley! I will put you to work!
I like to think I have a creative eye, but I swanee, when I saw the original photo, I thought you’d never find a way to fix it! Even in this half-way stage, I’m stunned. It looks, and is going to look AWESOME!
Thank you Leslie Anne! I was just down in your neck of the woods….attending the monthly estate sale in Mobile!
That foyer is going to be magnificent! It is a very grand space. Can’t wait to see it finished !
May I just tell you how amazing it looks already?!?! The finshed product is going to be jaw dropping…I just know!
Thank you Judy!
The foyer is already breathtaking…can’t imagine how magnificent it will be when its it completed!!!!
Thank you Shirley!
Oh, it is going to be spectacular!!! As is everything you touch! I adore those iron railings!!! How beautiful! Can’t wait to see it all done. You 2 are a fabulous team!!!
Thank you Pinky!
Love to see your new posts, l love this house and you have really done a beautiful job decorating it! Could you please show us the lay out of your house even if it is a rough sketch. I was surprised to see your family room from the front door .I had a different idea where the family room was. Would sure help know what door leads to what and how every thing flows. Do you have only one bedroom up on that landing and the other doors are storage, how wonderful to have so much storage . I enjoy your blog so much it is my favorite one.
Oh my goodness, what a job! But it’s going to be stunning! I’m looking forward to seeing it come together.
Thank you Cecilia!
~Cindy~
Ohhhh, looking so wonderful !!! I am hoping for a personal tour when she is all done wink wink , :). How is the extension added above doors and windows for height?!
Blessing,
Paula
In
p.s. be careful on the ladder please
Paula, the extension is made with a 6″ piece of MDF board, then a piece of crown was placed over it to finish the top off. Liquid nails and nailed into studs above door. Once it’s all painted, it looks as though they were all custom made door frames. We’ve done this in each room and it’s a wonderful, custom looking update!
Looking good so far….I can imagine what it will look like after you finish because first you have a special touch for decorating and second that foyer is beautiful!!!!
Thank you Nancy!
Your entry way is amazing!! I can see why you love this house.
Looking good!
It’s going to be beautiful. I love seeing pictures of your home. I study every single thing in the pictures. You really have a talent for decorating. I love the board and batten look….perfect choice.

Have a great day~
Thank you Mari!
I can’t wait to see the finished project…..your home is maybe one of my most favorite I’ve EVER seen! You’ve done it so beautifully, it inspires me.
Thank you so much Toni!
Even though you are not done it is looking beautiful already!
Thank you so much Angelina!
Oh Cindy what a beautiful home you have and all that work!! Your husband is a keeper since he helps you.
Thank you so much Rebecca! Yes, he’s definitely a keeper!
You are doing an amazing job! Your house is lucky to have you.
Looking forward to your progress.
I love all you said except painting the door black. It is beautiful as it is. The wood is gorgeous and the pattern unique. I would stain it a different color if you want but would not paint it. Once you paint its ruined. I hope you will consider just staining it. If you like it dark then a dark stain would be pretty.
It’s looking beautiful! The stairway is such a dramatic focal point, and so lovely with that railing. I’ve been wondering about that door that is almost at the top of the stairs. Why didn’t they end the stairs there? Its been a mystery to me since I first saw it.
Sheila, the first door on the stairs is the entry into the attic/storage space. The second door opens into a bedroom and bath. The landing actually curves on around from there to another doorway that opens into another storage room.
Those railings! That natural light! Oh my goodness! What a lovely space, even at this stage of your project! The foyer is the first impression when someone enters your home and it’s a stunner! Sorry for all the exclamation points but they’re absolutely necessary.
Thank you Kim!
Even though your foyer isn’t finished, it’s still gorgeous! I especially love your decorative iron railings! Can’t wait to see the completed project and how you will accessorize it – Be sure to keep us posted 🙂
Thank you Lisa!
Beautiful….but, I have a question. Why the selection to use board and batten above
chair rail where there had previously been wallpaper? Just wondering……
Nancy, are you talking about the original paneling that goes up the stairs? We aren’t adding board and batten above that. Those walls will be painted. We are, however, adding board and batten paneling to the walls that have none.
I know it is going to be just beautiful!
Many Blessings to you, Candy
Thank you Candy!
The foyer in our 1903 home is our next project! Wallpaper needs to come down, but I haven’ decided what the end results will be on the walls. Paint or wallpaper. Looking forward to seeing your project progress. It looks lovely so far…………
Thank you Linda!
It’s coming along Cindy! Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Thank you Gay!
It’s going to look amazing when it’s all finished! I love the stairs, high ceilings, planked ceiling. Good bones for sure in this house. It will be a grand entrance. I’m trying to visualize how you are doing the board and batten? Will you be removing the beautiful wood trim going up the staircase?
Thank you Sandy! No, we won’t be removing the original wood paneling that goes up the stairs. We are trying to keep as much of the original features that we can. We will be adding more board and batten paneling to some of the other walls that don’t currently have any, hopefully matching the original as closely as we can.
Cindy, it is looking so beautiful! That Chandy…love, love, love! Can’t wait to see more. Have a blessed week.
Thank you so much Susan!
I look forward to the entire process! Everyday I check in! :-))
Thank you Evelyn!
