The Transformation of a Grand Foyer
Believe it or not, the reveal of the foyer has arrived! We finally finished it, with the exception of a few minor touch ups that we will need to take care of in the next few weeks.
I love the final result, and the changes made all the difference in the world.
Let me refresh your memory with what this foyer looked like when we purchased our home.
It has a a beautiful curved staircase, but the entire space was very dated from the early 1970’s. The beautiful oak stairs were covered in carpet with a design of pink roses, all of the walls were wallpapered in forty year old wallpaper, and the tile was a dark green.
This is what it looks like today, after it’s transformation.
The first thing we did was remove the carpet from the stairs.
Unfortunately, the forty year old black rubber padding under the carpet had “melted” into the wood.
It took us weeks to remove the rubber, gently scraping a little at a time with mineral spirits. What a mess. Rubber pads and wood floors definitely don’t mix.
Next was removing the old wallpaper from all the walls.
Unlike the other rooms with wallpaper, this time it came off easily. What a relief that was!
We also removed old baseboard electric heating units {we had already installed a new heating system}, 40 year old thermostats, intercom speakers, and an old doorbell chime system.
We also replaced electrical outlet and light switch plates from the original beige color to white.
I love the look of paneled walls and wanted to create that look in the foyer, so we used decorative trim moulding (yards and yards of it!) to create the board and batten look.
We then painted the walls and trim the same color for the paneled wall look.
The high ceilings featured beams and planked vaulted ceilings, all original to the home.
Because the walls in the hallway leading to the bedrooms are two stories high, we raised the height of the board and batten in there to compensate for the height of the walls.
The walls above the panels were painted in the same soft gray that we have used throughout the house.
As we’ve done in all the rooms we’ve renovated, we added more moulding to the tops of the doorways to extend them, giving the look of added height.
The gorgeous wrought iron stair railing was forged at a local foundry and was installed in the original build of the house back in the early ’70’s.
All we needed to do was give it a fresh coat of glossy black paint.
We replaced all of the light fixtures with new pieces, hanging a lantern style light in the hallway leading to the bedrooms, as well as two wall sconces with small linen shades.
We tore the old green tile up which turned into quite the chore. We replaced the tile with beautiful slate porcelain tile.
We laid the new tile on the diagonal for just a bit of a design, and used a dark gray grout. I love this tile. It has such gorgeous shades of blue and brown in it, and has a slightly textured surface resembling real slate.
We painted all the woodwork white, using Benjamin Moore Advance paint in the Sherwin Williams color Snowbound. We’ve used this same white throughout the house and love it.
Once we finished the floor and painted the miles and miles of paneled walls, it was fun to start dressing it up a bit with a vintage frenchy commode that we picked up at an estate sale. You can see more of the makeover of this little beauty here.
The huge altar candleholders came out of an antique market. I actually passed them up the first time I saw them. The vendor that was selling them offered them to me at a very good price.
They’re very heavy and I wasn’t really sure where to put them, so I passed on them. And of course, I couldn’t stop thinking about them.
A month later, we returned to the same antique market and believe it or not, they were still there. The vendor offered them at an even better price than the first time, so I had to bring them home. They make quite the statement in the foyer topped with giant moss balls.
I have an affection for antique portraits, especially of children, so we’ve added a few to the foyer.
My favorites though, have to be the large framed art in the stairwell wall. Both are reproductions of the originals by Esteban Murillo, one of little St. John the Baptist, and the other the Christ Child.
The foyer was graced with a huge vintage chandelier that’s original to the house.
We cleaned it and now it sparkles when lit.
I’m sure we’ll be doing a little more tweaking to the foyer and it seems like the touch ups never end, but for the most part, the transformation of the grand foyer is finished!
Hmmmm…..what’s next on the list, I wonder…..
Cheers, Cindy

WOW, just wow. This home is incredible! I know you have moved, but what an amazing job you did. I am sure the new owner was happy that everything was in move in condition! I have many of your photos pinned for inspiration…thanks for sharing such a great journey of your undertaking.
Hi Cindy, just one more question. I’m looking at your downstairs photos and it looks like the doors are painted the same Snowbound as the door casings and trim. But, in your master bedroom you state you painted them Pussywillow. Are just the doors in the master bedroom painted differently?
Hi Ramona! We are slowly painting all of the interior doors in Pussywillow!
Hi Cindy, I saw ur news of putting this house on the market. I wish I could purchase it but alas, it isnt meant to be mine. I’m going to miss this house. I’m glad I’ve saved many pics of this house in Pinterest.
Cindy,
Would you be so kind to tell me what finish you used on your door knobs and whether you used knobs vs. levers. I’m moving from a country farmhouse to a french inspired home. I love matte black door levers but not every I like style comes in black. Most do come in oil rubbed bronze but I’m not a huge fan of that finish. Anyway, I’ve tried to see what you have used but most of your vantage points don’t show the doors. Thank so much for your help.
Hi Ramona! We have used both knobs and levers on our doors, and they are all the oil rubbed bronze. I hope this helps!
Wow Cindy – that’s a wonderful transformation! It must be so satisfying to walk in there now! Thanks for sharing – I’m definitely inspired!
Gorgeous! A fresh take on old world French charm!
So funny that you posted this today. My 9 year old granddaughter, Grace Ann, LOVES to decorate and design. She was spending the night earlier in the week and we go to talking about how I love to use angle statuary in decorating, inside and outside. I told her that she HAD to see your foyer and the ANGEL IN YOUR FOYER! So I did some digging and finally found your Christmas posts of this year. We both had a good laugh because there would be NO WAY an angel the size of yours could fit into our sweet little downsized home! All that to say that I realized that this was an older post because there is NO ANGEL at the front door!!!
Love increasing the height of the doors with more molding. Looking at mine…..
Wow! What an amazing transformation. It is stunning. That took a lot of hard work. I was tired just reading all that you had to tackle. The final result looks like a French estate. I love those Candlesticks.
Thank you so much, Deborah!
I’ve been admiring your decorating on pintrest. I was looking for ideas to spruce up my dining room. I kept coming across your photos. You’ve got some serious talent! It’s so refreshing to see something besides the hgtv farmhouse fad. Really amazing work, keep it up!
Thank you so much! Your sweet words have made my day!
WOW! Just read your post and am just amazed at this magnificent transformation. The french country distressed furniture is terrific in the space. I especially like the blue chest with the painted scene. Just lovely!
Thank you so much!
Just amazing! Ya’ll have done a wonderful job updating a lovely home. Congratulations
Thank you so much, Jo Anne!
Light and airy. Love the transformation! Removing the carpet and painting the surrounding panel a light color made a huge improvement as did the tile floor. Great large scale sheep paintings. Nice contrast with the interior black on the door. Pretty floral in the moss basket with curly willow. Very comfortable looking.
What a difference. Not sure how you saw past that green tile and carpet. So busy before. Y’all have done a beautiful job.
Thank you so much, Karen!
Absolutely spectacular, Cindy! I have been following along since you began this transformation and knew it would be amazing. Everything you selected makes a lovely statement. Enjoy!
Thank you so much Bobbi!
One word comes to mind,GRAND!
Thank you, Betty!
I adore the time and warmth you feel in this room!. May I ask, arw the vintage reproduction prints on the stair well dow thing you were able to purchase as is, or did you out these together yourself? I have a similar stairwell and need some large paintings. Thank you!

Stunning! I feel like I have just stepped into a grand Swedish estate. All of your hard work has definitely paid off.
Thank you Kimberly!
Hello Cindy! I love everything you’ve shared on your site especially all the religious artifacts. Could you direct me to some sources. I especially love the large statue in your foyer used for the holidays. Simply inspiring! ~ Joyce M.
Hi Joyce! We source most of our religious artifacts from Europe, and mostly from France. We have an online shop that we sell many of them….here’s the link: http://www.edithandevelyn.etsy.com
I’m so in love with that floor tile. It’s exactly what I’d love to put in my home, but it has been discontinued. I’m crushed.
I would check with Home Depot or Lowe’s. Daltile is a brand that they carry as well, and they may still have it.
OMG, I love your home. The transformation is fabulous. Thanks for sharing. Oh, by the way, can you come to our home and show us how to get our home half as gorgeous as yours?
Lol, thank you Ivory, you are too sweet!
Wow what a fantastic transformation to a faboulous house! Hugs from Sweden ” The home of Mora clocks”
Thank you Mia! As you can tell, I love Mora clocks!
Wow terrific job. Looks amazing!
Thank you Josie!
Gorgeous, your accessories are spot on. Love the commode and alter candlesticks, they add so much presence and the moral clock is perfect at the end of the hallway suggesting there is more to see. Your choice of artwork is a crowning touch.
Thank you so much Lois!
This is STUNNING!!! Magazine worthy. Incredibly beautiful.
Oh my goodness, thank you so much Sherrie!
What a stunning transformation. Just perfect!
Thank you Laurel!
This is my first visit and wow!! Truly a grand foyer and staircase. I love each detail and so glad you kept the original wrought iron railing. That curve and balcony are fantastic and the wall treatments are too! Those alter candle holders are amazing and fit right in beautifully! This is quite an accomplishment!
Thank you so much Liz!
Cindy, it’s utterly gorgeous! What a transformation! I entered this blog when you were talking about that little French commode transformation, so this has been so interesting to see what y’all did. I can imagine how much work it’s been & you have a shop to take care of & a blog too. Amazing! Where do you find the time?
Thank you Florence! Trust me, there are some days that I don’t find the time, and there’s never a time that I get it all done! I seem to stay in a constant mode of “catch up”. Thankfully, hubby has fully retired and he is a major help to me and my little cottage business, as well as helping to bring my “renovation dreams” to life. Thank you so much for following along, it means so much to me!
Wow, absolutely GORGEOUS! It feels so grand, and that planked ceiling with that chandelier are to die for! Love it!
Thank you Deb!
So beautiful!!
Thank you so much Mallori!
Wow, just wow! What a dream foyer — you must feel like a princess coming down that gorgeous staircase!
Thank you Anita!
wow Cindy. Really a huge project that just put you up in the stratosphere of DIYers!! So impressive!! I am in love with your home, and that iron railing and balcony detailing was so worth fighting for to make the rest of the foyer come into your european vision. Love love love!!!
Awww, thank you Amy. Coming from you, that is quite a compliment!
I knew it would be great, but never imagined it being this fabulous! Just beautiful.
Thank you so much Leslie Anne!
Wow, it turned out stunning! I especially love all the moulding and paneling. I want to put some paneling in my townhouse… maybe someday 😉
Thank you Cindy!
It looks beautiful! You did a great job bringing out its beauty. What a transformation!
Thank you Cecilia!
Absolutely stunning!
Thanks Peggy!
Oh Cindy! I love it!!! It’s exquisite! You both perfected every little detail and it doesn’t look like any tweaking is required. What a labor of love getting all that rubber off the stairs and taking the tile out. Your home has amazing bones and I’m sure that’s why you purchased it. I saw saw you featured at Rhoda’s Southern Hospitality. Congrats! I’m sure we will see you featured in many more places. I bet you just want to sit on those stairs and stare and take every detail in! Excellent transformation!
Thank you so much for your sweet words Sandy!
Once again you are rewarded for your patience and determination. The results are as lovely as everything else you both have created. Thanks so much for sharing!
Job extremely well done!!
Thank you so much for your kind words Debe!
Visiting from Southern Hospitality, and WOW! What a transformation!! I love your style and look forward to exploring more of your blog and beautiful home. I already pinned the molding you added to the top of the door to extend the height-what a great idea!
P.S. I can’t believe the first comment was that they didn’t like the black wrought iron on the staircase? Whaaat? That was my favorite part-ha! To each his own, I guess.
Thank you so much Sofia, and Welcome!
it’s absolutely lovely! you did a wonderful job. enjoy it now every time you enter the front door. xo-maryjo
Thank you Maryjo!
Of course it’s nothing but “GRAND”! Congratulations on a Show stopper!

Natalee
Thank you for your sweet words Natalee!
Cindy, I absolutely love the foyer! It’s beyond fab. You and your hubby do amazing work and are so inspiring. I’m alway checking to see what you have been working on. Your home is beyond beautiful. I would love to have you as a friend here in Indiana. Keep up making me drool!
Thank you so much Linda, your kind words mean so much to me!
Oh Cindy, I have been waiting for this,. and a big smile crossed my face when I saw your blog in my E mail. This needs to be on TV for sure ! You are amazing and it is gorgeous and you put so much detail and thought into your renovation.
Thank you so much for your kind words Deborah!
Well worth the wait. Such a beautiful foyer. I was interested in the wall sconces, did you remove the beading? I see you added the shades but from the pictures it was hard to tell about the beading. I see you reply to every post , a blog well done. I look forward to seeing everything you and your husband take on. Waiting for the next project, after a well deserved break I hope.
Hi Maryann! Yes, we removed the beading from the sconces and added small linen shades to soften the look. I was on the fence with the beading and saved it so that if I change my mind, I can go back and add it. They are really pretty sconces with or without the shades. Thanks so much for commenting!
The wait for the pictures of the foyer transformation was worth it. Beautiful, Cindy just beautiful.
Thank you so much Gray!
p.s. how do you make the molding above the doors for heights??
Thanks ! 🙂
Paula
Paula, we added a 6″ MDF board cut to the size of the width of the top of the doorway, and then we topped it with a decorative crown moulding. Once caulked and painted the same color as the door frames, it looks as though it was always there, gives a custom look, and visually extends the height of the doors. It also gives the appearance of a higher ceiling, by drawing the eye up. It’s very easy to do!
~Cindy~
Take my breath away , just stunning !!! Love the floor so beautiful as is the whole foyer . I agree my favorite are the two large hanging art , I wonder if prints would be available on a art website??
I hope you enjoy a little vacation before the next project 🙂
Paula
IN
Hi Paula! We are working with a local printing company to have these old masters paintings reproduced on canvas to sell in our online store. Thanks so much for commenting!
oh Cindy , that will be wonderful !!
have a super weekend !! 🙂
Simply gorgeous!!! My favorite are the large candle sticks. Great purchase!
Thanks Debbie!
So Beautiful! You and your hubs should be proud!
Thank you Vicki!
Congratulations on yet another beautiful transformation. May I ask you if the antique child portraits in your foyer are rare or do you often come across them? When you are out at estate sales, do you have a “wish list” for clients?
Thank you Pat! The child portraits are reproductions of the original Old Masters paintings. Some are vintage that we have picked up at various estate sales and antique markets. Some we have printed ourselves. We are working with a local printer to reproduce some of these old images on canvas paper and we’ll be selling them in our online shop. Yes, we often do “wish lists” for clients. Just let us know what you’re looking for!
I will keep an eye out for the reproductions on your online shop. Thanks for your reply.
Cindy, What a fabulous transformation….beautiful!
Thank you Sherry!
I have been waiting and waiting for all your beautiful-ness to be finished and oh how lovely it all is……thank you for sharing it with us all…..what a delightful, beautiful entry…..

Thank you Lynne!
Oh my goodness Cindy, the transformation is absolutely gorgeous! Your vision, dedication and hard work have certainly paid off. I wouldn’t change a thing as it is truly breathtaking. Thank you Penny!
AHHHHmazing! What a visionary you are!
Thank you Christy!
Cindy, I love everything you have done and I am so impressed with your skills and design decisions. I hope you use the front door to enter your house now and then! I have been on the fence with Agreeable Gray for a bedroom redo. Thank you for convincing me!
Thank you so much Deborah! I love Agreeable Gray, we have used it throughout the house.
Unbelievable Cindy! I love all that you and your Hubby do. What a labor of love!
It must be such a treat to walk into this beautiful home you two have created.
Such hard work and dedication! Yes, I think you both deserve a nice vacation break.
Have a wonderful summer.
linda
Thank you so much Linda!
You are master at this, Cindy! What I want to know is when are you getting your own show on HGTV? Lol! Enjoy your new foyer and thank you, as always, for sharing your hard work and tips with us. x o Robyn
Haha, Robyn, the HGTV show would have to be called, “Renovating with the Old Geezers”…..and they would have to allow for nap time and cocktail hour! Thanks so much for your sweet words!
Wow, wow, wow!!! What a transformation!! You guys worked SO HARD!! But it is now stunning!!
Thank you Lisa!
Cindy, I’m so glad you kept the black railing; I think it’s the focal point when you first enter the foyer. I also love the moulding. I bet it was so much fun decorating the finished space with your treasures. I don’t think people realize how much work is involved with a project this size. You both created an amazing foyer!
Thank you so much Pat! It turned into a bigger project than anticipated, but we are so pleased with the end result!
Oh wow!!! It is awesome. The millwork is very beautiful and the tall millwork in the hallway was really beautiful! I’m so glad you bought those large candlesticks as they are beautiful and perfect in there! And, seriosly that angel on the chest takes my breath away! Congratulations!!!
Thank you so much Karen!
Cindy,I can see myself ringing your doorbell and you opening the door and all that gorgeous right there. It is well worth the wait. All your readers has been waiting for this reveal. The work you and your husband has done on this house is unreal. Seeing the final reveal makes me realize how big this job entailed. I love everything you do.
Thank you so much for your sweet words, Sue!
Oh my Cindy, now that’s a grand entrance…..I love every single thing about this transformation from the wood trim to the paint colors…..your entrance is simply magnificent, I’m soooo loving those huge candle holders…just beautiful…
Enjoy the fruits of your labor…
Wishing you a wonderful day~
Mari
Thank you Mari!
So much lighter and brighter now! I LOVE the wrought iron the focus is on the railing and the wood just warms it up. I’m assuming the floor/railing go all the way to the center window over the doorway? I wish someone would think of that nowadays for cleaning purposes (my windows get all cobwebby/grimey). I don’t like ladders so I quick swipe with an extension pole and just say I’m already decorated for Halloween LOL!
Thank you Yvonne! Yes, the balcony runs all the way around to the windows!
That foyer feels like an overture to a great opera – beautiful and enticing. Like an overture, it gives me hints about what I can expect from the larger whole. Standing on the threshold, I’m drawn into the house with glimpses of gorgeous detail. Everything seems to call out to be touched. Such wonderful textures! I have to admit, I was never a big fan of French Country design…until I stumbled into your website. The colors you have chosen make such a difference.
I so admire your ability to see beyond the surface to the good bones of a space. The transformation you and your husband have achieved is incredible. Congratulations to you both for your vision and hard work. Bravo!
Thank you so much Linda for your kind words!
It almost made me cry. I mean really, it is so lovely I got choked. I love your house. We are surely kindred spirits. Well done you!!
Thanks Suzanne!
Absolutely exquisite…
Thank you Dawn!
Of course it’s lovely! You and your husband do wonderful work. It was a lucky day the day you and your home found each other. I don’t know anyone that would have done all that work and did it out of love. And it shows! REALLY BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you so much Suzanne!
Cindy-WOW , you put others to shame. I have been waiting for this reveal since you mentioned the project. Everything is perfect. You had a vision and you made it happen-just beautiful-Hats off to you, your husband and others who helped. One question, where is your lifesize angel ??!!
Thank you Kathy! The big angel is still in storage, I haven’t brought her back out yet. I have a little bit more touching up to do upstairs and then we’ll put her back on the landing!
Want a finished picture with her when it’s ready. Thanks again for sharing your home. Readers love love love these blogs !!!!! Your home is beautiful.
Thank you Kathy!
Amazing! I can’t believe the transformation, wow!!!

Have been waiting patiently to see the foyer reveal. It’s drop dead gorgeous! When I close my eyes an dream up my next project, this is the way I want it to look. You and hubby deserve a month long peaceful vacation from all work and worry. Thank you for making my day.
Thank you Alice! Hubby and I definitely need a little break from renovations. I’m looking for a beach and an umbrella drink…or a lake and a dock….I might even take a creek and a sandbar at this point! Haha!
Bravo for you. The foyer is absolutely stunning. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Also, somewhere I read that you are from Missouri, so am I; Columbia to be exact.
Thank you Linda! Yes, we are in Aurora, just South of Springfield. We are in Columbia every once in awhile antiquing!
Just stunning Cindy! The “before” colors remind me of my home growing up in the 70s. What is that little door at the top of the stairs on the right?
Thank you Gay! The door opens up into a large attic storage space!
Thank you for sharing. This space is so BEAUTIFUL!! It takes my breath away! Congrats on a stellar job. I’m envious…. 😉

As you know we ahve all been anxiously awaiting the BIG REVEAL and it sure does NOT disappoint! OMGoodness it is just gorgeous, as are all the rooms you have done! I love, LOVE the altar pieces, they make a magnificent statement!!!! Bravo to you and your hubby. Now, take a break and get some well deserved rest!!!! I would be smiling every time I walked through that foyer:):)
Thank you so much Pinky! I’m looking for a beach and an umbrella drink!
Long and hard work but the outcome is fabulous. Just wondering why did you use SW Snowbound in a Benjamin Moore paint? Did you use that throughout the house or just in the hallway?
Sherwin Williams Snowbound is the white that we’ve used throughout the house. We wanted to use Benjamin Moore Advance paint on all the woodwork in the foyer, and BM was able to mix the SW color formula for us. Thanks for commenting!
Now I just had to pick up my jaw from the floor!!!…..Jaw dropping gorgeous!…..The foyer is truly stunning. Such grand elegance from every vantage point. You and your hubby did a truly amazing job. So great that you started with great bones such as that exquisite staircase and railing. Love all of the beautiful things you filled the foyer with. The paintings are so beautiful….I am glad that you went back to that antique shop and got even a better deal. The candlesticks are certainly a showstopper…..Congrats to you and your hubby for creating a stunning space all from your labors of love!!!
Thank you Shirley!
So the door opened and my eyes went immediately to those fabulous candlesticks and the moss balls!!! What a find…so glad they were waiting for you the second time around!! Love the statue also…..how happy you must be it is done…and looks wonderful…all the hard work has paid off….enjoy your little rest!!!
Thank you Cheryl! I think there is a beach somewhere calling my name!
Go…go…go….dig those toes in the sand and relax!!!!
Cindy – it’s absolutely gorgeous!! I love everything you’ve done in your foyer! It truly is grande!! Hard work sure does pay off and I can just imagine the story of it in a future publication!!! Put your feet up and enjoy!! Have a wonderful summer:)
Celia
Thank you Celia!
Cindy…your home is truly stunning and the love you’ve put into it is incredible!
Thank you Janet!
where does the door at the top of the stairs go? The one on the right.
Hi Vickey, that door opens into a large attic storage area.
So beautiful! You had good bones to work with! I took the chandelier from my parents home that was built in 1967, to my new home in 2008. It favors yours a lot. There are so many places a person can use these in a French country home. Bravo. Good job. I love your email blogs. God Bless
Robin Riddick Fenner, RPH
Marble Falls, TX
Thank you so much Robin!
It’s so pretty, as your whole house is! Thanks for sharing. I enjoy your blog and look forward to the reveals and posts. Your home is an inspiration for me!

Cindy, it is just beautiful as I knew it would be. I know you are so thrilled to have this one marked off the list!! I hope y’all take a long break before the next big project.
Thanks Kim! We are definitely going to take a little break, this old gal is worn out!
Cindy,
You never cease to amaze. You and your hubby have taken a diamond in the rough and made it into a real gem.
Thank you so much Diane!
Cindy, now when you open your front door does your face smile and your heart jump

many years! 🙂
Thank you Rene!
Truely beautiful. I enjoyed the transformation so much!
Thank you Winnie!
Beautiful !
Thank you Danette!
Your hard work certainly paid off! The mill work is beautiful and you have a truly talented husband to be so patient measuring and cutting all that wood. I know you are so proud of it!
Thank you so much Sheila!
Hi, I think you did a beautiful job! Everything is perfect…not crazy about the black staircase railing. But not sure what other options you have???thanks,BC
Thank you Bridget. The wrought iron staircase railing was forged at a local foundry and is original to the house. It’s actually one of my favorite features of the foyer and I wouldn’t want to change it. Thanks for commenting!
I absolutely love the railing and wouldn’t have changed it either. I love how it contrasts against everything else.
Thank you so much Maryann! The stair railing is my favorite part of the foyer!
Oh…the railing is magnificent and the star of this beautiful foyer. I can’t imagine any other railing.
