An update on the master bedroom!
I thought I would give a little update on the progress on the Master Bedroom renovation.
We are at the tail end of it and as always, we have run into some challenges that have delayed the completion longer than we anticipated.
The last detail for this room was building in some cabinets around a window seat along one wall.
I could see what I wanted in my mind, and had drawn a picture so that hubby was on the same page. He’s been trying to execute what I was picturing and the cabinets have been dealing him fits, which has resulted in everything taking longer than we projected. {I know he cringes, when I say, “I’ve got this idea…..”}
Just in case you have forgotten what the master bedroom looked like when we bought this home a little over a year ago, I will give you a little refresher. Prepare to be zapped back into 1972.
It’s a nice, large bedroom, with lots of windows, and closets. But it was difficult to see those positive attributes when we saw it for the first time.
All we could see was pink shag carpet, popcorn ceiling, pink drapes, and lots of pink rose wallpaper. Everywhere.
Even inside the closets. {Miss Irene, the original and only previous owner, obviously adored pink!}
It was a little overwhelming, and dark.
Did I say there was pink shag carpet? Everywhere.
Here is where we are now.
The first thing we did when we started on this room was plank over the popcorn ceiling.
We whitewashed the planks with a pickling stain to lighten it up a bit and I love the end result.
This is the second room {the first was the kitchen} where we have planked the ceiling, and each time, I’m amazed at how beautiful it looks.
Much better than the nasty popcorn.
The wallpaper would not come down.
We’ve realized that apparently when the wallpaper was first installed in 1972, the sheet rock was not primed or “sized” before adhering the wallpaper.
Each time that we have tried removing it, the sheet rock comes down with it. And we have tried everything!
Not wanting to replace sheet rock, we decided to paint over the wallpaper and I was not at all certain that it would work. But it did.
After spackling the seams and sanding, priming the wallpaper with oil based primer, and then painting, you simply cannot tell that there’s a lot of rose wallpaper under there.
We painted the walls in Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray.
We planked below the chair rail and extended the height of the doors by adding wood and crown moulding to the top of all of the doorways.
All of the wood trim was primed and painted in Sherwin Williams Snowbound, and the doors were painted in Sherwin Williams Pussywillow.
We took all of the original brass door knobs off and gave them a good polish, and reinstalled them.
Next, the wood floor went down, and then it was time to start building the cabinets in around the window seat.
We happen to be some of those people that like a television in our bedroom.
We don’t watch it often, but it’s nice to have when hubby and I don’t want to watch the same things.
So I knew in the beginning of this room renovation that I wanted to build in some cabinets so that we could hide the tv.
To build the cabinets, we used “off the shelf” sink base cabinets from Lowe’s for the bases, adding decorative feet to the front.
Hubby built the shelves for the top, building them up to the ceiling, which will be trimmed out with crown moulding.
The doors have presented us with some challenges this past week but I think we finally have them done correctly.
You can see the frames for the doors leaning on the cabinets. They will have decorative metal grate installed in the openings so that it will hide the tv, but also will allow air flow, since we ended up with one air vent in a wall where one of the cabinets sits.
I have plans to add drapes to the window seat, in between the cabinets, and add some cushions.
Both cabinets will be trimmed out with crown moulding at the ceiling to give them the built in look.
I haven’t decided on paint for the cabinets yet, still debating on color choice.
You can see the cane bed has gotten moved back in. It’s getting painted, I’m going to try painting it in milk paint.
I’ve never used milk paint before so we will see how it goes, but it is definitely going to be a light color, a shade of white or pale gray.
I still haven’t found the right chandelier for the right price. Still looking.
I knew the bedroom was large before, but it’s amazing how much larger it looks by just getting it “lightened up”.
So that’s where we are as of now. We just need to get the cabinets finished and painted, and the floor trim put down around the baseboards. Then comes the fun part of decorating the room!
Hopefully, it won’t be much longer before we can do a final reveal. I know I’ve said it before, but each room we renovate always takes longer than I anticipate. Hubby and I are slow renovators, and some days, everything goes as planned. Other days, it’s one step forward, two steps back.
Cheers, Cindy
UPDATE: The master bedroom is now finished and you see the it HERE!
What color did you paint your doors in your master bedroom? Everything looks great, can’t wait to see the finished room!
Thank you Alaina! The color on the doors is Sherwin Williams Pussywillow.
What vision you have! Thank you so much for all the great little details and documenting the problem solving as well! You are inspiring and make me feel like I could do this! Cannot wait to see that ohhlala bed painted. …and you are so right about the adult beverage…beer is usually my vision inspiring beverage! ha!
Thank you Ruby!
Beautiful! Can’t wait to see the reveal!!
Thank you Heather!
How I could relate to your comments about two steps forward, one step back. I have said that many times over the last four months of a kitchen remodel. What you have accomplished so far is beautiful and I know how much work went into it. I am getting close to the finish line if our bodies hold out. My contractor, and brother, can’t move right now because he lifted a lawnmower over the weekend. You never know what will happen to hold up the job.
So true! It’s the unexpected things that seem to throw everything off track. Good luck on your kitchen remodel! That was the hardest room for us!
Great Job! It’s amazing what how much a little paint and imagination can do! Can’t wait to see it all finished!
Thanks Lynne!
Cindy this room is going to be stunning…love it already!
Thank you Martina!
You and hubby are so talented. It takes a lot of patience to take on a renovation. We did that when we were younger. I felt as if we never finished, always had a new ‘project’ to undertake. I enjoy your posts very much and love your decorating style!!!
Thank you Nancy!
Gorgeous, just like the kitchen.
Missed you at the sale last weekend, but it was SO CROWDED…I’ve never seen so many cars parked up and down the service road our front.
Y’all be careful out on the highways to Florida!
Judy
Thanks Judy! We missed being there, but honestly the last three times we were there, we were a little disappointed. But we will be back, it just hasn’t worked out with our schedule the last few months. From the looks of all the pictures posted, it looked like there was a lot of stuff this time. Hope you found some goodies!
it’s gorgeous, and looks like a completely different room. The bookshelves are amazing. they will be perfect for that space!
Thank you Debra! I am so looking forward to having this room done!
Hi Cindy, May Ellen here from Reflections of the Past!! Everything is looking Great!! I have used Milk Paint several times. I think you will like it…. Gives an authentic aged washed look. I like it better than some of the other options out there because they seem to be thick and show brush strokes. The Milk paint doesn’t do that and you can add more water for a washed look if you don’t want a painted look. Let me know what you think of it…. Also the waxes are more creamy and very easy to use. Happy Painting!!!
Thank you Mary Ellen! I am a newbie with milk paint, I have always used chalk paint, but never the milk paint. So I thought I would try something different this time. Wish me luck!
Oh, huge, huge difference! Love how bright and open it looks now. The cabinets are great! The planked ceiling is fabulous. Crazy how wallpaper was just applied to the wallboard back then. I ran into that at my house too. So annoying! And I get the renovation always taking longer than expected – I really thought our bathroom could be done in a week. Silly me. Ha. Your room is going to be just beautiful when you get done! I can’t wait to see it!
Thank you Cecilia! We are looking forward to having this room done!
It all looks just beautiful. Are you sure you don’t want to paint the new cabinets pink? 😉
Lol Julie! Pink is definitely NOT one of the choices!
Cindy, it’s taking you longer, but will be oh so worth it in the end. Looking fabulous and I love your bed. The milk paint should do fine on it. Are you going to let it chip?
Thanks Kim. I’m thinking that I will let it chip, I’m just hoping it doesn’t chip too much. If it does, then I will go back with the chalk paint. I like shabby and worn, but there is a fine line for me, at least with this piece.
Cindy…the room is looking fantastic. It is going to be such a gorgeous sanctuary for you two…love how you used stock cabinets for the built ins…and that ceiling….be still my heart!…
Thank you Shirley! I am ready for it to be finished!
I can hardly wait for the finished reveal. It is beautiful already!
Hugs, Gee
Thanks Gee!
It does look so much lighter/brighter/bigger! As usual, you and your husband are doing a stellar job! I look forward to seeing the final reveal!!
Thanks Celia!
Absolutely stunning!
Neither of the links you have posted in this post to the plank ceiling post or the kitchen post are working. Could you please give a working post? Thank you. Love your reno!
Thank you for letting me know, Martha! I have fixed the links in the post so they should work now!
