A little update on our powder room renovation!
We’ve been making some progress on our little powder room renovation and I wanted to give you an update.
Of course, there has been some glitches along the way, which seems to be the norm with every room that we renovate. I can’t say that we were surprised, but it has slowed things down a bit.
As a little reminder, this is what the powder room looked like before we started.
The powder room is so small that it makes photographing it difficult. The lighting isn’t great either, but I hope you can get a sense of the space.
I had a tentative plan for this bathroom, but as the makeover has evolved, some details have changed. I’ve found that when renovating an old home, one needs to be flexible, because there will always be unexpected issues.
The first thing we did in the powder room was remove the old wall tile, and in it’s place we installed board and batten. I painted it, as well as all of the woodwork, a beautiful white (Sherwin Williams Snowbound). This is the color of white that we’ve used throughout the house. It’s a beautiful, true white, and it’s worked so well with all of the other colors that we’ve used.
Here is where we are currently.
I love the board and batten! Just by adding this one detail completely changed the look. We also added a small crown moulding to the ceiling. We added wood feet to the original cabinet, and it will be painted in a pretty gray (Sherwin Williams Pussywillow) with new hardware. We’ll replace the sink faucet with a new one, and add a petite French trumeau mirror over the sink.
It’s amazing what little details can do to customize a space.
Searching for wallpaper for this little bath turned out to be harder than I thought. I ordered several samples of papers that I thought would look great, but once I had them in hand, I realized they didn’t work for various reasons.
We are leaving the original honeycomb floor tile, which is an aqua blue color, and I wanted a wallpaper that would complement the color without overwhelming the space.
I finally stumbled across a wallpaper that I loved immediately! It’s by York and I’m obsessed with it! The colors are perfect and complement the vintage floor tile so well.
This wallpaper also has a new backing, called SureStrip, that makes removing it very easy if we should decide to make a change down the road.
We removed the old, dated, shower door, and I plan on hanging a pretty shower curtain. Unfortunately, when we removed the door, some of the tiles came down with it. Then we noticed that there were quite a few loose tiles on the back shower wall, so we removed those as well.
Now, we will have to retile the door surround as well as the back wall of the shower.
I didn’t plan on having to do this, but I’ve learned that each room gives us an unexpected challenge.
A pretty light fixture has been hung, and I love how it looks, with it’s wood beads forming the globe. It’s from Capital Lighting.
While I’ve been working on some details in the powder room, hubby has started work in the adjoining laundry/mud room. I wanted to continue the board and batten look, so we are adding it in this room as well.
This week, the board and batten will be completed, and I’ll be caulking and painting it. Hubby has already scraped the popcorn ceiling and it is getting a new coat of paint as well.
As you can see, things are coming along, albeit, a bit slowly. But we are making progress!
Cheers, Cindy

Cindy…the powder room is already gorgeous!….and I am in love with that wallpaper too….love the colors and the design that has a beautiful watercolor effect…you two are always busy at work in the house, making it more and more spectacular!
Cindy, what gorgeous progress you have made! I love, love the wallpaper! Do I detect a hint of a Fleur de Leis in there? Or do I just see them everywhere? Thank you for sharing. I love everything you do.
Yes, there is a fleur de lis pattern in the wallpaper!
Good job! I love the choice of wallpaper you chose, it looks wonderful! 🙂
Cindy, Thanks to you & hubby for sharing your home & creativity ! Recently inherited my dads 60 year old home. Basically home is original, meaning it’s in need of complete overhaul. We have removed all of popcorn ceiling, furdowns next. Please can you tell again, after popcorn is removed: A. do we prime and paint
B. Is there any type of texture added to ceilings ? Thank you for your help in advance ! Jill
Hi Jill! After we removed our popcorn ceilings, we spackled and sanded any rough spots, then painted with a good quality ceiling paint. If there were any spots from old leaks, we primed with KILZ primer first, then painted. No texture was added to the ceiling, we wanted them smooth! I hope this helps!
Cindy, Thank you so much for advice! We do need to Kilz around fireplace – water spot visible. Now that I know our next step, I know what we will be doing this week-end. When project is finished I will try to share a photo. Thank you again, so very much . Jill
If there’s a better word for GORGEOUS then use that to describe that wallpaper!!! LOVE IT ❤️❤️❤️ Can’t wait to see the final reveal.
BTW: I’m the Ocala FL gal who asked about the flooring in your Master bedroom. We used it in our new home and are delighted with the result! Thanks so much for your help and advice
That’s wonderful, Deb!! Thanks for commenting!
Cindy,
The wallpaper is perfect for your house and this small bathroom. Yes, one thing always leads to more unexpected things, but usually it is a good thing to find out about those unexpected things. The loose tiles on the back of your shower could have begun to allow water to damage the wall behind them. So, it’s a good thing you needed to do some tile work elsewhere.
Happy Fall,
Judith
Thanks, Judith!
Thanks so much, Cindy
Cindy, I completely understand picking out the wallpaper with your floor!! We have the same floor, mine is in our hall bath. I gave up on paper, then had a difficult time even picking a paint. I finally did a faux grass cloth, took 6 coats to the walls to achieve. It’s a different blue, but the rug I used pulled everything together. Your bathroom is looking great. I’m so impressed with all you and your husband have achieved.
Thank you, Karen!
I absolutely love the wallpaper you chose for the powder room! It goes perfectly with the vintage tile floor. I can’t wait to see the final reveal! And I love the wooden chandelier but just curious why you went with this one instead of your usual crystal chandelier? Tell me you aren’t tired of crystal chandeliers! 😉 xo Dell
Hi Dell! No, not tired of crystal chandeliers at all, I still love them! I just wanted to use something with a little less bling in this tiny space.
Powder room is looking beautiful so far. Will you two be doing the tile work yourselves? Love that you are keeping the vintage tile.
Yes, we’ll be doing the tile work ourselves. We’ve done our own tile several times, so I’m not quite as intimidated as I once was! Thanks for commenting, Linda!
I also love the new light fixture! It makes such an elegant statement along with the beautiful new wallpaper with it’s lovely subtle shades. I am so looking forward to seeing the finished room. I know it will be beautiful! Thank you for sharing your progress with us.
Thank you so much for commenting, Lurlie!
I love the wallpaper! You make such beautiful choices. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much, Linda!
The bathroom looks great! Kudos to you for being able to caulk. It’s the hardest part from my perspective. Beautiful!
Caulking can be difficult….hubby is terrible at it, and I won’t let him do it anymore!
It’s coming along beautifully, Cindy! I love, love your wallpaper choice and that light is perfect there! I can’t wait to see it all completed. Happy fall!
Thank you, Debbie!
What you’ve done so far looks beautiful, the wallpaper is gorgeous and love the clean look of the bead board ! Great job !!
Thanks, Ida!
Love what you have done so far Cindy. You always inspire me to get busy on my own home. I always get great ideas from what you have done.
Thank you, Linda!
Stunning and I agree with the previous compliments. Curious how you will restore the floor to its original beauty. Will a good cleaning work or will you regrout?
Hi Jonelle! I’m hoping a good grout cleaner will work because I really don’t want to re-grout!!
There is a company (Sir Grout) that comes out and ‘paints’ the grout…I think they are a franchise so might be in your area, as well as, mine in NJ. (You never know, right?) We’ve had it done….the grout looks brand new and…you can even change grout colors! It has held up very well. I love the wallpaper…especially the way it picks up the other colors of your house which is very noticeable from the angle of the photo!!! This is really coming along so nicely….I cannot wait for more photos!
Thank you so much, Susan! I will check this out!
This is just beautiful, Cindy! I love all your choices, and appreciate how you’re working with and incorporating some of the original elements. It might not be your first choice, but it’s nice to see that a whole room, no matter the size, doesnt have to be completely gutted to bring new life to a space!
Thank you, Roxie!
You sure keep busy. 🙂
Cindy, I love the wallpaper! Would you mind sharing the pattern name. Thanks so much, Kathy

Love the bathroom renovation!
Thanks, Roz!
If you have answered this question in past blogs, please forgive me. But — when you remove the popcorn texture from your ceilings, do you have to do much repair work before you are able to paint? I’m tempted to try but leary of what might be under the texture. Love what you are doing in the bathroom but I have to admit that I’m envious of what appears to be a quite large laundry room. I am redoing my laundry room in an effort to get more room where none is really available. As I am very claustrophobic, I’ve got to work this out or move. Maybe a stackable washer & dryer ? I’ve already added a full glass French door to let in lots of natural light. That has helped a lot. Maybe teach my husband how to do the laundry? Might as well start packing!
Hi Claire! When we have scraped our popcorn ceilings, there are usually a few spots on the sheetrock that have to be spackled and sanded before painting, but it’s not difficult to make these small repairs. Our laundry room is probably the largest that we’ve ever had, and it’s nice to have this much room and extra storage. Yes, a stackable washer and dryer would definitely be a spacesaver, and there are some really nice ones out there now. I love the idea of adding a full glass French door for added light….you might also paint the walls and cabinets in lighter colors, which would visually create a larger looking space. I hope that helps, and thank you so much for commenting!
Beautiful Cindy can’t wait to see the finished product! Did I miss the reveal of your guest room?
Thanks, Gloria! No, you didn’t miss the reveal of the guest room! It’s finished, but there’s no furniture in it! I’ve been searching for the right pieces to go in there, and have a few, but it’s not complete yet!
Love, love, love the wallpaper Cindy! This looks awesome and will work great with the floor tile. I think smaller rooms are just more fun to work with. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Betty!
Looking fabulous Cindy! Love the wallpaper and cannot wait to see the finished product.
Thank you so much, Nancy!
That backdoor! Love all the charm in the details of your home and then how you ramp it up the style even more. Even the utility room is charming. I installed board and batten also which gives such a fresh look.
Thank you, Andrea! I love the look of board and batten as well, and it does add such wonderful custom look to a space. Thank you so much for commenting!
Cindy,
I love the wallpaper! I have aqua accents and I would love that in a fabric for pillows. The light fixture is great as well. Can’t wait to see the finished project.
Thank you so much Diane!
