The Pretty Little French Pig!
Sometimes you find a pretty vintage piece that brings a smile to your face every time you look at it.
Such is the case of le petit cochon français….or…..the little french pig!
I found it at a recent auction, and originally purchased it for re-sell in my online shop.
However, once I it arrived, I fell in love with it, and decided he was a keeper!
Even though it’s made of porcelain, it looks fabulous displayed among my other vintage ironstone pieces displayed on the French estanier cabinet.
The cabinet will need to be rearranged to make room for the little piggy, so for now he’s just sitting in front of the cabinet.
Made in France by Apilco, this porcelain French dinnerware is a favorite among chefs. The Apilco company was founded in 1826 by the Deshoulières family with the mission to create aesthetic dinnerware to meet the aspirations of the leading chefs in France.
Finding these sweet companion pieces to the Apilco dinnerware is a rarity, especially when they have the French writing in black transferware.
The sweet little piggy has a sweet design with pink roses, and on the side in black letters is “Le Saucisson“…..”Sausage”!
I don’t think he’s designed to hold sausage, but rather crackers.
Of course, he could be re-purposed in so many ways….holding silverware, sugar packets, or small candies.
Who knows, at some point I may decide to go ahead and sell him, after I enjoy him for a bit.
But for now, he is proudly displayed on the Louis XV commode, next to the the French estanier cabinet that’s filled with French and English ironstone.
I have a weakness for old ironstone advertising pieces, and though le petite cochon isn’t very old, he fits in perfectly with the other pieces!
Cheers, Cindy
Hi Cindy
I love your beautiful little piggy! especially the pink rose border. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
My family background is Portuguese and I have 2 clay piggies, of course nothing as beautiful as yours, but they are used for cooking sausages. You put alcohol or other fuel on the inside bottom of the piggy, put the pork sausages on top of the strips across it and light the fuel which cooks the sausage as the fuel/ alcohol burns. I’m not sure I would use your porcelain piggy for that, maybe serve sausages. Just a bit of info..
Hope you’re keeping safe and healthy. Miss seeing your pooch.
Wonderful!!! Where is the best place to find the French ironstone?
Estate sales, flea markets, antique markets, eBay, Etsy, and our shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/edithandevelyn!
