I love simple, easy, decorating and using pieces where I can simply change out the presentation according to the season or holiday. My front door was needing some vintage style, and I was tired of the same old wreath that seemed to always make it’s way out there. Little did I know that Decor Steals would be sending me just the perfect piece!
A few weeks ago, I was thrilled to be asked to participate in a fun event that Decor Steals puts together called Design Ingenuity Event, where they team up two bloggers and send them a mystery item, and then we have to come up with a way to use it in our home. I’m partnering with one of my favorite bloggers, Anita at Cedar Hill Farmhouse, for this challenge, and I couldn’t wait to see what Decor Steals was sending!
When my mystery box arrived, as soon as I opened it and saw this cute post box with it’s vintage design, I knew it would be perfect hanging on our front door.
Made of glavanized metal, it has this wonderful vintage, bas relief image on the front, of a bird and flowers. I love birds and nests and use them quite a bit in decorating during the Spring and Summer. My mama {Edith} loved decorating with nests and birds and that has definitely been passed on to me. Did you know that birds symbolize luck and fortune? And nests, {especially with eggs}, symbolize hope and love?
I took some white paint and just with the tip of my finger, rubbed some over the raised areas on the post box, just enough to highlight the design a bit more. And then I started digging in some of my stash, bringing out some Spanish moss, a grapevine nest with blue eggs, a bird, and some silk hydrangeas. I stuffed some paper down in the bottom of the post box and built everything on top of it so that it was “spilling” out of the top.
The post box is a nice large size so it works perfectly for a centerpiece on the door.
I topped it with a large burlap ribbon and draped it over the sides.
I love the way it turned out! It has such a great vintage look and feel to it and it’s such a nice change from my normal “go to” door wreath. Everyone that has visited in the last few days has commented and asked where I found that cool vintage post box!
This post box could be used for so many other things and I just know you are thinking of some great ideas right now!
And remember me saying that I liked easy decorating ideas, and being able to just change the look seasonally?
Well, for Memorial Day weekend, I simply changed the contents out to something a little more patriotic. This look will also work perfectly for the upcoming 4th of July.
Simple and easy decorating, all with a vintage feel!
Thank you Decor Steals for asking me to participate in this event, I had so much fun!

I just came across your blog post while searching for ways to use my metal post box like this! Excited to try this idea! I love your design style, and your entryway is just beautiful! Are your spiral topiaries boxwood?
Hi Sarah Marie! The entry topiaries are faux boxwood…..I’ve killed several sets of real boxwood topiaries, so I now have the faux! 🙂
I would hang this beside my stove and use it to store my larger cooking utensils. I love the vintage patina and lettering on this. It’s gorgeous.
such a wonderful way to use this, and I love how you highlighted it. it looks perfect on your door, perfect for any season or holiday!
Thank you Debra!
Cindy you had a great idea using it on your front door. I also love the way you painted the details white to make them pop and the way you styled both, for spring/summer and for the holiday!
It’s gorgeous, Cindy! I love the fact that you can change the look with ease, and you’ve knocked it out of the park with both looks. Congrats on the work with Decor Steals!
I’m loving your front door too! The design of the door is pretty and the black just sets it off…I painted mine black a few years ago and I love it. Everything seems to look so good against black.
Judy
Thank you Judy! The door is original to the house and you should have seen it before we painted it! The paint had completely worn off, it was just raw wood. I love it painted black, it brings out all the interesting details. John wanted a red door…..but you see who won that argument! Ha!
Cindy! I love your front entry. The addition of the post box really makes a statement against your black door. You’re right. This post box has so many uses! Each week I eargerly anticipate when you’ll post again. I love gazing at your home and many projects!
Thank you Sandy!
Just ordered one of these after seeing your post. It is amazing how similar our styles are. I was in the same quandary about my front door. The postal box with the bird and hydrangea combination is a delight!
So glad you got one Lisa! It has such a great look! Enjoy!
I love that “post box” it is perfect for your gorgeous door!…Yes, Decor Steals always has the greatest things!…loved how you changed out the decor in the post box for the current season/holiday….Your front porch is amazing!
