Blessing our home in a simple way!
There’s been progress in the renovation of the guest bedroom, and this week we’ve been writing on the walls!
Several months ago, I read a story about new homeowners blessing their home by writing bible scriptures on the unpainted walls, sub floors, and studs as their house was being built. I absolutely loved the idea, and wanted to do something like this in our own home. I wish I had known this when we started our renovation.
I heard of this amazing tradition too late to incorporate it into our other rooms, however we were just starting the reno in the guest room, so it was a perfect opportunity to bless our home.
Here’s a little reminder of what the guest room looked like when we started. It had lots of wallpaper, heavy drapes, and carpeting that we had already removed.
Please excuse the mess and random furniture! This room had become a “catch all” for storing items while we worked on the rest of the house.
We started this makeover by stripping the wallpaper, removing the heavy drapes and carpet, and removing the original electrical baseboard heating units.
We primed all of the woodwork and painted it white {Sherwin Williams Snowbound). Crown moulding was added to the ceiling and we also added the extra moulding to the top of the doors to visually extend the height.
Once this was all done, it was time to write our favorite bible scriptures on the walls and on the sub floor before painting and laying the new floors.
I want God’s blessing on this home, and His word permanently inscribed in it.
Hubby and I, (and Miss RubyLou), chose to write our favorite scriptures on the walls and floor.
We used a pencil for writing on the walls so it wouldn’t bleed through when we painted, and a sharpie pen on the sub floor.
“Praise the Lord! For great is His love towards us.” Psalm 117
“Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.” Psalm 122:7
“My God is my strong tower.” Proverbs 18:10
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8
“May He grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed.” Psalm 20:4
“I am a princess and my Father is the King of Kings!” 1 Peter 2:9
“The Lord Bless thee and keep thee.” Numbers 6:24
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
After we finished writing our favorite scriptures on the walls, we started painting the walls in my favorite gray, Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray.
The wood floors are going down next!
Thank you for allowing me to share the blessing of this room. I’m smitten with this idea and going forward, I’ll do it in each room as we prepare to renovate it.
I love the idea of walking through this room when it’s finished and remembering the scripture that’s written under the paint and floors. And maybe, someday in the future, someone new will remove the floors and discover the scripture written there.
Cheers, Cindy

I love your scripture written in your home. What a blessing and witness to everyone on your blog. God bless you . Cherry
Your vision and ideas are amazing! I look at every square inch of the rooms you’ve transformed because it is all so beautiful. Oh, how I love the scriptural writings on the walls and floors. I just bought a small condo built in 1972 and I’m also renovating as much as I can. Before painting, I will incorporate some of the scriptures you used as well as others. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Hi Cindy. I know this post is over two years old but I am just reading it. I love this idea and it immediately brought to mind a story my mom told me when I was young. She said when she and my father married, her parents gave them their first home as a wedding present. It was a small urban row house/townhouse, and after they tore off the old wallpaper, they wrote love letters to each other and short love poems all over the walls before they painted. I thought that the most romantic thing! I often wondered if they were ever discovered decades later after we moved. I think that’s another sort of blessing for a happy home 🙂
Oh, Barbara, what a wonderful story! I love that idea, as well as writing the blessings on the walls. I agree, I think it creates a beautiful energy for one’s home! Thank you so much for sharing!
The Home Blessings is a beautiful idea! I love the scriptures you choose. Thank you for sharing this idea.
What a fantastic idea. We are in the process of putting new floors throughout so I most definitely will get together with my husband and come up with our favorite scripture passages. I just found your blog and your home is a delight full of charm.
Thanks for sharing and I look forward in seeing your talented creativity.
Thank you so much, Carol! Welcome!
What a cute idea! I am so going to do this next time I paint a room.
I know, isn’t it great?!? I wish I had thought of doing it sooner, but will definitely “bless” each room going forward! Thanks for commenting, Jessica!
I had not heard of this custom, but I’m deeply appreciative of your sharing it as well as the scriptures you chose. The molding you put over the doorway and closet doors adds so much to the room’s architecture. Did you also put molding around the windows?
Thank you so much, Deb! Because the drapes will cover most of the window frames, we didn’t add the extra moulding there, only over the doors.
We did something similar when we were building our home. We wrote scriptures on the studs and over the door posts. Love this post and your idea.
Thank you so much, Linda!
I have been following your continued progress of your home..So much love and hard work that you and your husband have put into it. I have written passages in houses that we have renovated, lived in and then sold in the past. We lost our home during the hurricane in Houston. We are still displaced. When we do have a house again, there will be many verses written on our walls, Thank you for sharing.
Kathy, I am saying a prayer for you and your family right now and will keep you in my prayers, for you to be back in a home soon! Hugs, dear friend!

Isn’t it a wonderful idea, Sherri?!? I love doing this! Thank you so much for commenting….you are a blessing to me, dear friend!
Cindy, Such a lovely idea. I have a dear friend, that actually wrote above her back door, words to her two little boys. “Eat your peas, wash your hand, say thank you and be nice.” It was so sweet. Your idea is just beautiful, a lovely treasure for someone to uncover years from now.
Have a beautiful week, hope you are seeing spring.
Sandra, I love your friend’s idea! Though it’s raining here today, we are finally seeing some warmer Spring like weather. Hopefully it is here to stay! Have a great week!
We have done this before as well. I’m just curious, how many more rooms do you have to go in your house? You and your husband have WORKED SO HARD on it. The love shows a 1000 times over!
Thank you, Toni! It seems like the renovation is never ending, doesn’t it?!? The rooms we have left that haven’t been renovated are four bathrooms, a laundry/pantry area, and another bedroom upstairs. I may actually be seeing the light at the end of this very long tunnel!
Your guess is turning out very bit as beautiful as the rest of your home….your sweet Ruby is just adorable…..
Smiles~
Mari

They did this at my church, and there is something so special and comforting to be surrounded by scripture. I’ve thought I should do this next time I paint the interior of my house, so thanks for the reminder and the inspiration!
It’s a wonderful way to surround yourself with God’s word. Thank you for commenting, Keli!
I absolutely love this idea. We are at a standstill right now waiting for the next inspection with our carriage house/garage. This would be a lovely sentiment to add. Thank you for posting. <3
I agree, Cindy!
Wonderful idea! I will be writing scriptures the next time I redo! When we enclosed our porch to sunroom, I wrote the builders name and dates on the studs. Builder was my husbands brother. Anxious to see guest room decorated!
Thank you, Nancy!

Thank you so much, Cindy!
Lovely! We’ve done this at our church since the beginning. Every time a new addition was added, the congregation was invited to write prayers and scriptures. Love the idea of doing it in a home. Can’t wait to see how this room turns out, I’m sure it will be beautiful!
It’s such a lovely idea, Kim!

Thank you, Julie! I wish I had done this in each room, and we will going forward! Thanks for commenting!
Love this idea!…Great choices of scripture….It reminds me long ago that a contractor/sub wrote a scripture on the drywall of a house we were building. It was the house that basically our son grew up in (over 17 years) and we had wonderful times and memories there. The day before we moved out of that house, my son surprised us by coming home from college as he wanted to say good-bye to the house that he had so many memories in…that truly touched us. The guest room is off to a great start!
Shirley, I love this memory! What a wonderful story!
This is such a blessing to me. We are having the entire upstairs done this summer and I willl praise the lord with much joy as I write His revealed words on the walls. I would like to personally thank the person that you learned this from plus I thank you for sharing .
