French Child’s Chair Makeover and A New Find

French Furniture

Our sweet petite French child’s chair has a new makeover and we have also found a new treasure!

What’s better than one antique Louis XV child’s chair? Well, two of course!

I consider antique French children’s chairs to be unicorns because they are rarely found. If you remember, I found this sweet antique Louis XV French child’s chair a little over a year ago on Facebook Marketplace.

Well, a few days ago, I was doing some searching on eBay and found another one! I couldn’t believe it!

This new find is such a sweet little Louis XV chair, made of walnut, and upholstered in ivory damask with nailhead trim.

When it arrived, I was shocked at the condition. It looks as though it’s never been used.

The wood and upholstery is just gorgeous. And on the underneath side, “Made in France” is engraved into the frame.

After the new chair arrived, I decided to give the first one a small makeover.

It was originally found with cranberry red damask upholstery. The seat was very stained and I have tried cleaning it, but nothing seemed to work. Since I was never completely happy with the color of the upholstery anyway, I decided to change it to something lighter.

I remembered that I had a remnant of an antique white linen French sheet that was monogrammed with my initials. I had been keeping this remnant for awhile, hoping to find something to use it on, and realized that it would work perfectly for this little French chair.

It was an easy task, being so small, and I love the lighter look, as well as the addition of the nailhead trim.

The French needlework monogram is the icing on the cake!

I have been searching for a tiny tiger print pillow to place in this chair for awhile but I never could find one in the size that I needed. So I ended up buying the cover on Amazon and then I just cut it down to the size I needed.

These two little chairs look so cute sitting side by side.

Antique Louis XV and XVI children’s furniture is extremely hard to find and the prices are quite exorbitant.

The odds of finding two of them isn’t very high!

The Louis XV period aligned with the Rococo period in European art and design, and this timeframe was one of extreme wealth.

During this time, children’s furniture was designed and made just as the “adult” size furniture was made, but in diminutive sizes. Only the affluent French families owned these sweet petite pieces.

I can just see this little side chair being used as part of a child size dining set with a beautiful walnut French table, and surrounded with these petite Louis chairs.

I’m not sure why I’m so enamored with child size French furniture, but they do evoke such sweetness when displayed.

French Child's Chair Makeover and A New Find | Edith and Evelyn | www.edithandevelyn.comMany times French children in the 19th century would have eaten in another room with their nanny or governess, depending on the social status and customs of their family. Quite often, wealthier families had a separate dining room for the children.

Children were expected to behave properly at the table and were often taught table manners and etiquette from a young age by their governess.

Miss RubyLou is saying, “Really? Another one?”

How exciting for you! I just love your new Childs chair, however I think the transformation on your original Childs chair to the monogrammed version is stunning! Will miss Ruby Lou sit in your new chair as she did in your original one? Good score.

Thank you, Shelley! The new chair is just a bit smaller….and Miss RubyLou has gotten a bit chunky in her old age, so she probably won’t sit in this one!

With a little paper clay, decorative moulds, chalk paint, and touches of antique gold, simple craft store pumpkins become elegant French -inspired treasures. I love the beautiful texture and old world character the moulded details give each one….and no two are alike!

They’re gathered in an antique dough bowl for a soft, sophisticated fall centerpiece that can be enjoyed year after year.

“It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who “It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives—the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember.”~Ronald Reagan

To every family who has sacrificed a loved one so that we could enjoy our loved ones today, thank you.
